John Georgevich

Formerly Of Newtown

John Georgevich, 90, died April 1, in Roseland, Fla. He was born May 21, 1921, in Pennsylvania.

Mr Georgevich served as an American Merchant Marine during World War II from 1942 to 1945, and was the recipient of several military honors for his service. He was one of the survivors aboard the SS John Barry, a 7,200-ton American liberty ship that was torpedoed and sunk by a German submarine U-859, off the coast of Oman in the Arabian Sea, on August 28, 1944.

Mr Georgevich raised his family in Newtown for 38 years. In 1985, he and his wife Mary moved to Roseland.

For many years in Florida, he was an active member of the St Sebastian Church, the American Merchant Marine Chapter in Vero Beach, the Special Spotlight Theater in Melbourne, and a variety of organ music clubs within the Treasure Coast area.

His final days were spent surrounded by family, including his devoted wife Mary, of 67 years; his daughter Joan and son-in-law Ross; and his two grandchildren.

His family remembers Mr Georgevich as a man of deep integrity, love, and devotion, saying, “You will always be on our minds, forever in our hearts. Thank you for the wonderful memories. Rest in Peace.”

An intimate memorial service was held at the Fountainhead Funeral Home and Cemetery in Palm Bay, Fla., on April 5.

His family has requested memorial gifts be made to the VNA Hospice House in Vero Beach at www.vnatc.com.
