They say that curiosity killed the cat, but I’m happy to report one of Margaretta and Lionel Brown’s two kittens survived his most recent bout of curiosity. He did get himself into quite a jam, however.

The two new kittens in the Brown household, Cole and Maggie, don’t have a lot of experience with the great outdoors, so on one of Cole’s few ventures outside last Saturday, he developed an overwhelming curiosity about what it would be like to climb up a 70-foot-tall hemlock tree. Once he got up there, however, he had no curiosity whatsoever about climbing down. He knew all he wanted to know about that subject: He didn’t want to do it.

Despite much pleading from humans on the ground, Cole refused to budge, and he ended up spending the night in the tree, complaining loudly about his predicament for much of the time. Finally a call went out to the Brown’s Shepard Hill Road neighbor, Greg Korotash, a fire volunteer and expert ladder and tree climber. Greg responded quickly, and with a shopping bag in hand, scrambled up a ladder high into the tree, where he coaxed a compliant Cole into the bag. As you can see from the picture, Cole was reluctant to leave the security of the bag even after he and Greg returned to earth. His curiosity sated for the time being, Cole returned to full-time couch sitting for the rest of the week.

Food Network groupies have probably seen the Rachel Ray Chefography Special by Stone House Productions that has recently aired. But who knew that those lovely hands stirring, rolling dough, driving the car, and doing other handy things are not the hands of the popular Ms Ray, but rather the hands of Newtown’s own Zoë Velush-Rogers? Like so many Food Network stars, Ms Ray’s busy schedule does not allow her the time it would take to film all of the scenes that illustrate her life — and that’s where re-creation footage comes in. Zoë just happened to have an “in” with the Stone House Productions producer (“Hello? Dad? Anything interesting happening?”) and some free time on her…hands…. So before she knew it, her hands were in the acting business. If you see Zoë around town, give her a hand…not that she needs one.

Some folks from Sandy Hook enjoyed a colorful wedding in the desert on March 25, when Jessica Shpunt married Joseph Fiorini. Sue and Jim Shpunt of Sandy Hook, as well as their son Jamie, were among a dozen people who attended the wedding of the Shpunts’ daughter, Jessica, at the Valley of Fire, a scenic desert setting amid towering red rock formations in the arid area outside Las Vegas, Nev. A good time was had by all, according to Sue, who described the dramatic setting as an interesting place for nuptials.

It’s a chance for a starring role without ever having to open your mouth; what could be better? The mock trial To Kill A Mockingbird performance still needs white males over the age of 21 to play the parts of jurors at the April 28 performance. Contact Kim Weber at the library at 426-4533 and get yourself a ringside seat.

If being in the spotlight is just too much for you, stop by the library to purchase a ticket for either the 2 pm performance on April 28, or the evening performance that includes a delicious selection of Southern-style vittles postplay. The librarians are concerned that residents will miss out on a fabulous performance if they don’t hurry into the library soon to purchase the limited number of tickets.

Churchgoers at the United Methodist Church were dismayed when Rev Terry Pfeiffer announced at the 8 am service last Sunday that he would be retiring June 1….April Fool! But the much-beloved Rev Pfeiffer was stunned by his congregation’s response when clued-in 10 am worshippers turned the tables on him, stood and applauded his announcement … April Fool!

Gary Fetzer is make headway in his efforts to renovate the property he owns on Sugar Street just down the street from The Pleasance. The property has a house and a converted barn on it, and the barn is a particular challenge since there didn’t seem to be a right angle in the place when he bought it. It’s got lots of charm… except for one thing. Gary says he’s seen a gray wolf patrolling the backyard on occasion. That’s just the kind of news that’s going to keep me out of the neighborhood for a while. I’m not curious in the least about what it’s like to meet a wolf.

If you want to know exactly what has caught my curiosity next week, be sure to…
