Senior services for Newtown seniors are available at the Multi-Purpose Building on Riverside Road in Sandy Hook. The Senior Center is under the auspices of The Commission on Aging. The center is run by Senior Services Director Marilyn Place. For more information about programs offered at the Senior Center call 270-4310.

You may drop in at the Senior Center on Riverside Road in Sandy Hook weekdays between 9 am and 4 pm. A hot meal is served at noon for which you must reserve three days in advance.

Newtown has daily door-to-door minibus service Monday through Friday. Buses also run all day from the Senior Center to Sand Hill Plaza. On Fridays, the bus alternates between rides to Danbury Fair Mall and Berkshire Plaza in Danbury (to Wal-Mart Route 6). Cost is 65¢ each way for the Sand Hill Plaza trip, 75¢ each way for out of town. Call 748-2511 TWO DAYS IN ADVANCE to book a ride and get the out-of-town Friday schedule.

 

This Week’s Programs

*AARP INCOME TAX ASSISTANCE available on Mondays only through April 9, 9 am to noon by appointment only. Bring last year’s tax return and any other pertinent information. Call 270-4310 to set up an appointment.

*COMPUTER LESSONS are given every Monday and Tuesday at 3 pm.

*On Tuesday at 10 am and 1 pm, make CARDS FOR THE TROOPS serving overseas.

*LARRY GATLIN and the GATLIN BROTHERS at the Mohegan Sun on Wednesday, April 11. A buffet lunch is included. Depart the Senior Center at 8 am; cost is $69 per person.

*BINGO: April 18, 25

*BOARD GAME DAY is every Thursday at 1 pm. Coffee or tea and snack will be supplied.

*MOVIE TIME on Fridays at 1 pm. Enjoy a good “favorite” movie with a friend. We supply the video and popcorn.

*ANTIQUE ROAD SHOW produced by Harrison Galleries will take place April 10, at 1 pm. Limit one item  per person.

*Our young people and adult volunteers will help with spring cleaning, yard work, window washing, or other basic chores on INDEPENDENT LIVING DAY, Saturday, April 28. Call to sign up.

 

Day Trips

*MADAMA BUTTERFLY will be presented by the New York City Opera at Lincoln Center Sunday, April 22. Butterfly is sung in Italian with English supertitles. Lunch is included at Les Sans Sulottes. Departure is at 8:30 am. Cost is $160 per person. Final payment is due.

ITALIAN FEST at Mount Haven Resort, in the foothills of the Poconos, only an hour and a half by bus. Complete breakfast and dinner buffets and live entertainment of Italian music. Cost per person is $66. Depart at 8 am.

*Tour The CULINARY INSTITUTE OF AMERICA Thursday, May 31, in Hyde Park, N.Y., enjoy a Northern Italian cuisine at Caterina De Medici, and then onto Millbrook Vineyard in Millbrook, N.Y., for a wine tasting. $82 per person; bus departs at 8 am.

*THE ROCKETTES at Radio City Music Hall on Friday, November 9, with lunch at Rudy’s. Early booking special, $105 per person.

*Visit Broadway and see “JERSEY BOYS” and have lunch at Oscar’s at the famous Waldorf Astoria Hotel. Depart the Senior Center at 9:15 am, on Wednesday, December 5; cost is $193 per person.

 

Overnight Trips

*FUTURE TRIPS include a 3-day trip to Pennsylvania Dutch countryside and visit the King Tut exhibit in Philadelphia, July 25–27; an 8-day tour of Scotland, August 22–30; and an Atlantic Canada Cruise September 3–8. Trip booklets are available at the front desk.

Monday: April 9: Hungarian goulash served over egg noodles, green and wax beans, wheat dinner roll, seasonal fresh fruit.

Tuesday: April 10: Hot open turkey sandwich on wheat bread with gravy, cut sweet potatoes, broccoli florets, cranberry sauce garnish, sugar cookie.

Wednesday: Fish & chips or roast beef sandwich on oatmeal bread with mayonnaise, french fries with ketchup, tossed salad with tomato & French dressing, tartar sauce, apple juice, Bartlett pear halves;

Thursday: BBQ chicken quarter, macaroni and cheese, green peas, buttermilk biscuit, fruit cocktail.

Also, for planning ahead—

Monday: April 16: Chicken cacciatore served over penne pasta, chipped spinach, whole wheat bread, blueberry pie.

Tuesday: April 17: Cream of mushroom soup with crackers, tuna salad plate on bed of lettuce, with tomato and pasta & vegetable salad, French dressing, soft breadstick, diet fruit Jell-O with whipped topping.

Tuesday: AM pinochle, country-western line dancing; PM Tai Chi & Chi Kung, walking for fitness, computer classes, crafts.

Thursday: AM Breakfast Club, hatha yoga, cards; PM walking for fitness, board games.

Friday: AM advanced mah jongg, sewing, quilting, PM movie time, knitting, cards.
