A large school bus that was carrying three students home from school on the afternoon of Thursday, March 26, was involved in a four-vehicle accident on South Main Street (Route 25), near its intersection with Blue Spruce Drive in Botsford.
The driver of a sedan, which was pushed into the rear end of the school bus in the chain-reaction crash, was transported to Danbury Hospital by the Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps to be checked for injuries, police said.
At about 3:22 pm, school bus driver Maria Adams, 56, of 22 Little Brook Lane, stopped the northbound bus to allow a student passenger to get off the bus, police said. The three boy passengers on the bus were ages 10 and 11.
Northbound motorist Marilyn Wilkes, 50, of Brookfield, who was driving a 2001 Volkswagen Jetta sedan, then stopped behind the school bus, police said.
Northbound motorist Frank Bizzaco, 22, of Brewster, N.Y., who was driving a 2004 Subaru Legacy sedan, then stopped behind the Volkswagen, police said.
Northbound trucker Samyr Oliveira, 25, of Danbury, who was driving a 2007 Nissan box truck, then struck the rear end of the Subaru, pushing the Subaru into the rear end of the Volkswagen, police said. That impact pushed the hood of the Volkswagen beneath the rear overhang of the school bus.
Botsford firefighters responded to the accident, which occurred a short distance from the Botsford Firehouse.
Wilkes was transported by ambulance to Danbury Hospital to be checked for neck pain, police said. Wilkes was treated at the hospital and then released, a hospital spokeswoman said.
After investigating, police Patrol Officer Douglass Poole issued Oliveira an infraction ticket for following too closely and for a driverâs license violation.
The accident caused travel delays in the area at the start of the afternoon rush period.
