Mother Nature threw a late winter snowstorm at us and then threw in some rain on Wednesday – the official Opening Day of the Newtown High School spring sports campaign – but she can only hold the Nighthawks back for so long.

And then it begins.

The 2007 season opens with the girls’ lacrosse team defending back-to-back South-West Conference championships, the girls’ tennis team defending an SWC championship, and the boys’ tennis, boys’ track, girls’ track, boys’ lacrosse, golf, baseball and softball teams all looking forward to April and May with great expectations in their eyes and a lot of promise on their respective fields of battle.

How will it all shape up in the end? Check back in nine weeks or so.

But first, look what Newtown High School sports has in store for its fans …

GIRLS LACROSSE

Coach: Maura Fletcher

Last year: 17-2, SWC champs

The bulls-eye is squarely on their backs.

The Newtown High School girls’ lacrosse team dominated the South-West Conference in 2005 and 2006, winning back-to-back championships while compiling 29 wins in 36 games.

But it’s not going to get any easier for the Lady Nighthawks, who will seek a three-peat in 2007 without some critical components – like defender Carly Curran (now at the University of Connecticut), goaltender Kerrie Canavan, attack home Karli Beitel (40-62-102 in 2006 with 123 career goals) and midfielder Lauren Ciccomascolo (60-8-68).

“We are in a tough spot,” head coach Maura Fletcher agreed. “Everyone is out for Newtown. That’s the word I hear out there. Do we hope to win? Absolutely. We work so hard and the rewards have been great. We will miss a few key players on the field, but it has just made room for others to take the lead and shine.”

The ‘Hawks might be missing more than 100 goals from an explosive offense, but they return plenty of potent scorers like Rachel Maley (39-23-62), Kate Sudbey (32-6-38), Courtney Gleason (26-6-32) and Jen Greenwood (19-19-38) and some equally capable scorers like Moira Collier (13-7-20), Betsy Vendel (11-4-15) and Libby Feltch (9-1-10).

“We have a lot of go-to players,” coach Fletcher said. “Libby Feltch, Betsy Vendel and Courtney Gleason are extremely unselfish players and will have a huge impact on the team.”

The ‘Hawks will also look to Lisa Isabella to step in and fill the large shoes of Canavan, the 2005 SWC tournament MVP. But she has been the varsity backup for two years now and appears ready to take over.

“We are a young team,” said coach Fletcher, “but we have quite a few players with varsity experience and we should be a force in our conference should we stay healthy.”

GIRLS TENNIS

Coach: Maureen Maher

Last year: 14-1, SWC champs

It was an exciting 2006 season as the Newtown High School girls’ tennis team captured its first ever South-West Conference championship last year (heck – first championship of any kind), but it was a costly one.

The Lady Nighthawks lost No. 1 singles Lauren Nemeth, No. 2 singles Sarah Salbu, No. 4 singles Ashley Gabor and No. 1 doubles tandem Jill Tanner and Emily Fields to graduation and open defense of their SWC title with a very different look.

Will the ‘Hawks be able to rebound from those losses?

Coach Maureen Maher thinks so.

“I am so excited about our team this year,” she said. “My returning players are very good and my new players are equally as good.  My two new freshman are experienced players. I have a lot of depth this year, again, which is a great thing. Not knowing where to put my players because the level between most of them is minimal is a problem I don’t mind having. It is going to be a lot of fun moving them around at the beginning trying to figure out where every one will play as the season begins.”

Returning to the court will be co-captain Kristene Salbu, who was an undefeated SWC individual champion at No. 3 singles a year ago. Also returning will be Katie Serock and co-captain Jenna Moser, two-time defending SWC doubles champions together for their third consecutive year.

Then there is Nikia McFadden, Lauren DeFelice, Charlotte Manos, Maxx Zimmer, Erin Nemeth and Katie Freeman returning with experience with sophomore Rachele Cox and freshmen Christina Ciamarra and Jenna Himmelfarb ready to make a contribution.

“Not only are they all really good players,” said coach Maher, “but one girl could not be nicer than the next. They work so hard and the way they all get along will hopefully make for a wonderful and successful season. We are going to have an exciting year.”

The schedule –

April 4 – versus Joel Barlow, 4 pm; April 5 – at Lauralton Hall (Eisenhower Park), 4 pm; April 10 – versus Weston, 4 pm; April 11 – versus Bunnell, 3:45 pm; April 12 – versus Bethel, 4 pm; April 23 – at Notre Dame (Wonderland Of Ice), 4 pm; April 25 – versus Masuk, 4 pm; April 26 – at New Milford, 4 pm; April 30 – versus Brookfield, 4 pm; May 2 – at Immaculate (Rogers Park), 4 pm; May 3 – at New Fairfield, 4 pm; May 7 – versus Stratford, 4 pm; May 9 – at Joel Barlow, 4 pm; May 10 – at Pomperaug, 4 pm; May 14 – versus Lauralton Hall, 4 pm.

BASEBALL

Coach: Carl Strait

Last year: 13-9 overall

Last year about this time the Newtown High School was about to embark on an 8-0 run – including a win over Pomperaug in Cooperstown, New York – to serve notice that it was prepared to challenge for a South-West Conference championship.

But the Nighthawks faltered … faltered badly down the stretch, winning just five of their last 14 games and getting bounced from the SWC and CIAC Class LL state tournaments after opening round losses.

Bouncing back from that would have been difficult anyway, considering the ‘Hawks graduated two of their top pitchers and three of their top offensive threats, but it has been made especially difficult considering the ‘Hawks lost their No. 1 starter, Dan Murdoch, to a torn ACL before spring training even opened.

“Last year have been one of the better years in Newtown history, record-wise,” said head coach Carl Strait, “but it left a bad taste in our mouths. We want to improve not only on last year’s record, but on our play as a team.”

The graduation losses that hurt the most were Brian Shimko (.347, 2 doubles, 4 triples, 14 RBI), Peter Oggeri (.268, 3 doubles, team-high 15 RBI), Steve Vichiola (.333, 3 doubles, 11 RBI), Steve Marks (.310, 2 doubles, 12 RBI and 5-5 with a 1.68 ERA) and Alex Dolan (.382, 7 RBI and 2-0 with a 1.56 ERA).

Meanwhile, Murdoch was 3-3 with a 2.40 ERA, 34 strikeouts and just 23 hits allowed in 35 innings of work and would have been one of the strongest pitchers in the SWC.

But don’t get the impression that the Newtown cupboard is bare. The ‘Hawks still have one of the top offensive threats and top pitching prospects in the SWC in Ryan McGrath, who has already signed his letter of intent to pitch at Wake Forest. On the mound, McGrath – pitching from a variety of arm angles – was 1-1 with a 3.11 ERA and 20 hits allowed in 27 innings of work. At the plate, he hit .323 with seven doubles, a triple, 11 RBI and a .605 on-base percentage.

Then there is centerfielder Joe DeVellis, the guy who sets the table. DeVellis hit .380 with a team-high 27 hits and a team-high 22 runs, banging out a pair of doubles and a triple along the way.

“McGrath and DeVellis are strong leaders and have a lot of experience,” said coach Strait. “We are ready to play as a TEAM this year. Obviously we would love to make it back to the SWC and state tournament, but we are only going as far as our leadership and team play takes us. If we gel and play as a team, we have no limits.”

The ‘Hawks will also look for a major contribution from shortstop Mike Tibbetts, who hit .292 with 14 RBI in 2006. Although Tibbetts threw just seven innings, he will be relied on just as much on the mound as in the field.

The door is also open for Brian Cullinan (.217, HR, 4 RBI), Seth Hull (.323, 2 triples, 4 RBI), Alex Magoulas (.222, 3 doubles 1 RBI), Nick Urso (.300, 1 RBI) and Tony Galluci (.286, double, 4 RBI) to make a bigger contribution with Greg Rodden, Charlie LoBosco, George Zaruba, Peter Cochrane, Kyle Kromberg, Jake DeVellis, Chris McGrath, Wilson Davidson and Matt Gastonguay stepping in.

There are a lot of solid baseball players on the team, but few specialists and coach Strait will likely be putting a lot of different looks out on the diamond as the ‘Hawks look to bounce back from a disappointing finish in 2006.

The schedule –

April 5 – versus Danbury, 3:45 pm; April 7 – at Wilton, 11 am; April 11 – at Bunnell, 3:45 pm; April 13 – versus Bethel, 3:45 pm; April 13 – versus Bethel, 3:45 pm; April 14 – at Pomperaug (Cooperstown, New York), 1:30 pm; April 16 – at Weston, 3:45 pm; April 18 – versus Joel Barlow, 3:45 pm; April 20 – at New Fairfield, 11 am;April 23 – versus New Fairfield, 3:45 pm; April 25 – at Joel Barlow, 3:45 pm; April 27 – versus Notre Dame, 3:45 pm; April 27 – versus Notre Dame, 3:45 pm; April 30 – at Bethel, 3:45 pm; May 2 – versus Immaculate, 3:45 pm; May 3 – at New Milford, 3:45 pm; May 7 – versus Pomperaug, 3:45 pm; May 9 – versus Bunnell, 3:45 pm; May 11 – versus Weston, 3:45 pm; May 14 – at Brookfield, 3:45 pm; May 16 – versus Stratford, 3:45 pm; May 17 – at Masuk, 3:45 pm.

GIRLS TRACK

Coach: Doug Russell

Last year: 4th at SWCs

After winning back-to-back South-West Conference championships in 2004 and 2005, the Newtown High School girls’ track team finally took a step back in 2006, finishing fourth at the SWC meet behind Weston, Masuk and Pomperaug.

And the Lady Nighthawks lost some exceptional performers from that team, including Alex Konneker, Ciara Simek, Tara Gaston, Sadie and Remy Ball, Lindsay Weber, Kristi Nowak, Darcy Fiscella, Jess Cosgrove, Kayla Mesko, Teresa Taylor and Becky Huot.

No need to wonder how the ‘Hawks could recover, though, because a strong core of returning athletes and a team that numbers 92 (more than 30 of ‘em freshmen) are ready to take another run at an SWC title.

The key returnees will be tri-captains Julie Landin, Michelle Brennan and Alison McEmber. A solid group of juniors (29 all told) will be led by distance runners Jen Brill, Elise DeRoo, Sara Pollock, Christie Attanasio, jumper Harriet Morgan and sprinter Emily Lockhart.

They will lead a very young team that has shown a lot of strength and athleticism early. Sophomores to keep an eye on will be Kelley Sullivan and Lauren Sudbey, not to mention sophomore newcomers Tania Domingos (slotted for the 800 meters) and Kasey Schultz (slotted for the sprints).

A group of young throwers, including Rachel Taback and Erin Fish, are ready to make a contribution, as well.

“I could continue to talk about the enthusiasm I see in this group of girls for a long time,” said coach Russell. “We want to be a strong dual meet team and possibly win our division and have a good showing in the SWC’s this season – maybe top four. I continue to be amazed at the numbers we keep getting. This is going to be an exciting season.”

The schedule –

April 10 – versus Brookfield and Immaculate, 4 pm; April 24 – versus New Fairfield, Notre Dame and Pomperaug, 4 pm; May 1 – at Bethel, Weston and Lauralton Hall (Weston), 4 pm; May 8 – at New Milford, Joel Barlow and Stratford, 4 pm; May 16 – versus Bunnell and Masuk, 4 pm.

GOLF

Coach: Jenn Huettner

Last year: 8-3 (SWC), 11-5

It is unfortunate that the late winter ice storm that blanketed the northeast (now a distant memory) postponed the start of the 2007 season by four or five days because the Newtown High School golf team is chomping at the bit to get started.

The senior-laden team is coming off an 11-5 season (8-3 in the South-West Conference) and expects to compete for a championship. So why wait to get started?

“I anticipate that Newtown can do quite well this year,” said head coach Jenn Huettner. “We have three solid starters in captain Billy McCann, Steve Oberstadt and Pat Daly with Evan Gregoire and JP McDade rounding out the team but freshman Chris McCann will see a lot of action this year and senior Ashley Hart, a transfer student from Arizona, could make quite a contribution.”

If the ‘Hawks are to capture that elusive SWC title (last won in 1996), they figure they will have to go through Pomperaug, with a slew of strong sophomores, to do it. Weston has always been strong in the SWC and a new coach is at the helm.

“I’m optimistically hoping that we finish in the top three,” said coach Huettner. “The boys want first place, which is just what I want to hear. I think that the kids can improve on last year. I’m also hoping that either an individual or the team can qualify for the state tournament this year.”

Senior members include Daly, Billy McCann, McDade, Gregoire, Hart, Chris Kraft, Ian McChord and Drew Taylor with juniors Stephen Oberstadt, Kevin Schneider and Kevin Troy and freshmen Scott Kim, Chris McCann and Kevin O’Connell.

The schedule –

April 9 – at Pomperaug/Watertown (Heritage Village GC), 2:15 pm; April 10 – at Joel Barlow (Redding CC), 3 pm; April 12 – versus Masuk (Newtown CC), 3 pm; April 24 – at Stratford, 3 pm; April 25 – at Immaculate (Richter Park), 3 pm; May 1 – versus Bethel (Newtown CC), 3 pm; May 2 – at New Milford (Candlewood Valley CC), 3 pm; May 3 – versus Brookfield (Newtown CC), 3 pm; May 7 – at Weston (Aspetuck Valley CC), 3 pm; May 9 – at Bunnell (Oronoque CC), 3 pm; May 10 – versus Pomperaug (Newtown CC), 3 pm; May 15 – versus Notre Dame (Newtown CC), 3 pm; May 16 – at Masuk (Whitney Farms GC), 3 pm; May 17 – versus Joel Barlow (Newtown CC), 3 pm; May 22 – versus Weston (Newtown CC), 3 pm.

BOYS TENNIS

Coach: Marty Margulies

Last year: 7-8

Despite a lackluster finish to the 2006 season and some tough graduation losses, the Newtown High School boys’ tennis team enters the new campaign this week with renewed enthusiasm and some high hopes.

The Nighthawks – suffering a key injury – limped to a 7-8 finish last year and then had to big farewell to half of their singles contingent, No. 1 Drew Adamek and No. 3 Max Margulies, not to mention the No. 1 doubles tandem of Mike Coster and Jim Wilkins.

But the glass is not half-empty here, it’s half-full. A strong returning unit and lot of talented newcomers as coach Marty Margulies brimming.

“I am excited by the uniformly high quality of our freshman players,” he said. “We are going to have more depth than we’ve had in my seven years of coaching here. I think we can win a lot of matches at the lower singles and doubles positions, even against schools that beat us last year. Those schools might be in for quite a surprise when they see how far down the roster the quality extends.”

Singles players Chris Meier and Mario Roehrs are back and will vie for the No. 1 spot … unless one of the younger players beats them out. The second doubles tandem of a year ago, Adam Wenick and Evan Batzer, also is back but are now slotted for third and fourth singles, respectively.

Moving Wenick and Batzer to singles makes sense because the ‘Hawks expect to be formidable in doubles. Returning junior Adam Feldman and freshmen Colin Jacobs, Peter Manos, Max Paynter, Timo Roehrs and Casey Tenney will man those slots.

A strong group of reserves -  senior tri-captains Dave Wilkins and Ben Wicki and juniors Evan Ritzinger and Dan Cassidy, all of them veterans, will be ready to contribute along with newcomers Steve Jaroszewski, a junior, and Justin Carotti, a senior.

“Any of these boys is capable of challenging for a starting position,” said coach Margulies. “(Because of the weather), we haven’t been able to squeeze in enough ladder matches for me to have a firm sense of who will play where. My impression, though, is that most of these boys could beat one another on given days – that the differences between them, in other words, are not all that great – and that we should therefore be tough whatever the starting rotation turns out to be.”

The schedule –

April 4 – at New Milford, 4 pm; April 5 – versus Masuk, 4 pm; April 10 – at Weston, 4 pm; April 11 – at Bunnell, 3:45 pm; April 12 – at Bethel, 4 pm; April 23 – versus Notre Dame, 4 pm; April 25 – at Masuk, 4 pm; April 26 – versus New Milford, 4 pm; April 30 – at Brookfield, 4 pm; May 2 – versus Immaculate, 4 pm; May 3 – versus New Fairfield, 4 pm; May 7 – at Stratford, 4 pm; May 9 – versus Joel Barlow, 4 pm; May 10 – versus Pomperaug, 4 pm.

SOFTBALL

Coach: Bob Guerrera

Last year: 11-12

Virtually intact and more seasoned than a year ago, the Newtown High School softball team appears primed and ready to take the next step under second-year coach Bob Guerrera.

The Lady Nighthawks did suffer some key losses in catcher Ashley Ferris (.238, 13 RBI), third baseman Jenna Van Waalwijk (.254, 14 RBI) and outfielder Lisa Alberico (.359, 8 RBI), but the remainder of the team returns with a year of varsity experience under its belt.

“We experienced the growing pains that everyone has to deal with when most of your players are at the varsity level of competition for the first time,” said coach Guerrera. “But now, all of the girls have at least one varsity season under their belt – including a full summer season of tournament softball – and we should be more improved and seasoned than last year.”

The ‘Hawks finished 11-12 a year ago, but included in that was a dramatic South-West Conference tournament win over Lauralton Hall. Sophomore Jenna Legros (4-8 with a 1.31 ERA during the regular season), who fired a two-hitter in that win, returns to anchor the pitching staff along with sophomore Stacy Broughton (6-1 with a 0.84 ERA during the regular season).

In the field, four-year starter Sammie Ciaccia (.258, 12 RBI) returns at short while Kelly Tenney (.379, team-high 22 hits, 12 RBI, All-SWC) will hold down the first sack. Joanna Barry (.204, 9 RBI, team-high 16 runs scored) will step in at third with Katie Schmidt (.264, 11 RBI) will step in at second. Melissa Fracker (.260, 5 RBI, 11 runs scored) and Jax Van Waalwijk (.207, 6 RBI) will patrol the outfield with infielder/outfielder Nora Lynn Shimko (.304, 10 RBI, 10 runs scored) providing an explosive offensive threat.

“All these girls are returning starters,” said coach Guerrera, “and they give us the experience and versatility we didn’t have last season.”

Along with senior pitcher Mariale Renna, the ‘Hawks have a host of talented newcomers who will be vying for varsity time – freshmen Ally Modzelewski, Katie Bowen, Rachel Ruiz and Ashley Kuligowski and sophomores Caitlin Cosgrove and Marley Koschel.

“We have an athletic group of girls that afford me a lot of options both defensively and offensively and this is where I think that our strength lies,” said coach Guerrera. “With good pitching, good defense and some added power in the lineup, I think that this group can be special if they play with that fire and desire to win.”

The schedule –

April 4 – versus Greenwich, 4 pm; April 7 – at Bunnell, 12 noon;April 9 – versus Lauralton Hall, 3:45 pm; April 11 – versus New Milford, 3:45 pm; April 13 – at Pomperaug (Community Field), 3:45 pm; April 16 – at Weston (Hurlbutt Elementary School), 3:45 pm; April 18 – versus Joel Barlow, 4 pm; April 20 – at New Fairfield, 11 am; April 23 – versus Kolbe Cathedral, 3:45 pm; April 24 – at Trumbull, 3:45 pm; April 27 – versus Notre Dame, 3:45 pm; April 30 – at Bethel (Johnson School), 3:45 pm; May 2 – versus Immaculate (Treadwell Park), 7 pm; May 3 – at New Milford, 3:45 pm; May 7 – versus Pomperaug (Treadwell Park), 7 pm; May 9 – versus Bunnell (Treadwell Park), 7 pm; May 11 – at Lauralton Hall, 3:45 pm; May 14 – at Brookfield, 3:45 pm; May 16 – versus Stratford, 5 pm; May 17 – at Masuk, 4:15 pm.

BOYS TRACK

Coach: Ed Obloj

Last year: 9th at SWCs

Running fast and running far – ultimately, those will be the two biggest strengths of the Newtown High School boys’ track team in 2007.

“We have an incredible group of distance runners,” said head coach Ed Obloj, “and I’m really happy with what times trials have shown us. We’ll be very strong in distance and sprints.”

The core group from an exceptional cross country team – including co-captains Scott Nichols and Eric Macknight as well as Zach Schwartz and Charlie Baldour – will bolster the distance unit and help lead a Nighthawks team which finished ninth at the South-West Conference championships a year ago. The sprint group will be led by co-captains Brian Pennarola and Nathaniel Basch-Gould, but they are the tip of a deep group.

“We usually have a small group of sprinters,” said coach Obloj, “and if one gets hurt the whole team gets hurt. Now we’re much deeper.”

An up and coming junior class – including Jamie Goodwick, Steve Ashbolt and Matt Boland – will help strengthen the sprinters and the short distance unit, too, and may be as strong as any in the SWC.

The problem in 2007 lies in the field and jumping events where the ‘Hawks were hurt by the graduation losses hurdler Jeff Lipnick, vaulter Chris Nuelle and high jumpers Mike Mitchell and Ryan Morrissey.

Those are units the ‘Hawks will be working on vigorously as the 2007 season opens, but with nearly 90 athletes on the team there is bound to be someone ready to step in and take over … and hopefully help lead Newtown back to the upper echelon of the SWC.

The schedule –

April 9 – versus Brookfield and Immaculate, 4 pm; April 23 – at New Fairfield, Notre Dame and Pomperaug, 4 pm; April 30 – versus Bethel and Weston, 4 pm; May 7 – at New Milford, Joel Barlow and Stratford (Bunnell), 4 pm; May 14 – at Bunnell and Masuk, 4 pm.

BOYS LACROSSE

Coach: Brian Micena

Last year: 6-10

Losing the top goal scorer, top defender and starting goaltender sure must sting … but for the Newtown High School boys’ lacrosse team it will be like suffering that brief sting from ripping a band aid off a cut.

Grit your teeth and move on.

Okay, the Nighthawks lost attackman Grant Speer (21-6-27), defenseman Marc Ingerman (redshirting at Towson State University) and goaltender Drew Harmata from a team that finished 6-10 overall but the team remains strong on defensive, very athletic in the midfield and deep all across the field.

“I think we will be strong defensively this year,” said head coach Brian Micena. “We are going to be inexperienced in the goal and our attack will be relatively young, so we will need to dictate the pace of play in what has been a very competitive SWC and challenging non-league schedule.”

The defense could be the key to the success of the Nighthawks in 2007 with seniors Scott Regnery and Max Reed and juniors Brett Mauro and Conor Martin anchoring that unit. Look for junior Ryan Manning to make a contribution.

The midfield is solid and deep and will likely carry the offense on its back as senior Travis Speer (14-5-19), junior Will Mahony (14-3-17), sophomore Brian Reszoly (12-4-16), senior Zack D’Agostino (9-4-13), junior Collin Babbage (5-3-8) and senior Tom Hutchinson back on the pitch.

The attack itself, though, will be young, led by junior Brendan Martin (9-6-15) and junior Zack Varga (0-2-2) leading the way. Aside from the, the unit is very young with sophomores Christian Beitel, Kevin Canavan and Collin Theaman ready for a shot and a host of freshmen waiting in the wings.

The ‘Hawks lost solid experience in the cage with the graduation of Harmata and will look to senior Ted Gissen, junior Max Beitel or sophomore Clarence Cheung to fill that hole.

“We are athletic and have the deepest team we have had in a few years,” said coach Micena. “This should help us as the season progresses if everyone can stay healthy. Our offseason has been great and we look forward to taking the program a step further.”

The schedule –

April 4 – versus Immaculate (Treadwell), 4 pm; April 7 – at Brien McMahon, 12 noon; April 10 – versus Joel Barlow (Treadwell), 4 pm; April 13 – versus Branford (Treadwell), 4 pm; April 17 – at Weston, 6 pm; April 20 – at East Lyme, 7 pm; April 23 – at Masuk, 7 pm; April 28 – versus Norwalk (Blue & Gold), 7 pm; May 3 – versus New Milford (Blue & Gold), 7 pm; May 5 – at Conard, 3:30 pm; May 8 – at New Fairfield, 4 pm; May 10 – versus Pomperaug (Blue & Gold), 7 pm; May 12 – versus South Windsor, 1 pm; May 15 – versus Brookfield (Blue & Gold), 7 pm; May 17 – at Notre Dame, 4 pm.
