The Newtown eighth-grade boys' travel basketball team capped an impressive 2000-01 season (in which it amassed a record of 21-3) by capturing the recent Wilton Basketball Tournament championship.

Newtown defeated Wilton, 56-48, in the tournament final.

Newtown 49, Bethel 25: Stephen Lamb dropped in 16 points while Brennan Coakley added 14 of his own. Anthony Santella and Josh Rouse combined for 19 more. Mike Cash and Ryan Davies had fine floor games.
Newtown 56, Westport/ Weston 43: Five different players scored in double figures, with Josh Rouse leading the way at 12. Anthony Santella and Brennan Coakley chipped in with 11 points apiece while Kyle Lyddy and Stephen Lamb tossed in 10 apiece. Kevin Quinn and John Collins played well.
Newtown 58, Wilton 42: Stephen Lamb canned 12 points and Josh Rouse added 10 more to lead Newtown to the win. Brennan Coakley and Kyle Lyddy contributed nine points apiece. Pete Dittmar and Scott Newberry had fine floor games.
Newtown 56, Wilton 48 (Final): Stephen Lamb poured in 22 points and Marcus Tracy added 16 more as Newtown trimmed Wilton for the second time in a row to capture the tournament championship. Brennan Coakley grabbed 18 rebounds.
