The defending South-West Conference champions have a new look. Newtown High School’s girls’ tennis team lost nine players from last year’s title squad, notably the top two singles standouts. As a result, Coach Maureen Maher and company will look to the emergence of those returning as well as some newcomers.

And while this is a squad loaded with underclassmen setting up for a potentially bright couple of years down the short road, this is not completely a rebuilding slate.

“I am very excited about this year’s team. There is a lot of young talent,” Maher said. “The returning players bring a lot of energy and experience to the team. They all had some playing time last year so they are excited to get back out on the court and play in some matches.”

Senior captains are Margaret Donovan and Ella Morits. Other returning players are juniors Sophia Dutsar, Brooke Jackson, Katie Jarvis, Emma Lyddy, Jamie Rowan, Molly Tinkler, and Eren Weiss.

Additions to the roster are sophomores Rebecca Goldman, Eliana Musn, Ella Romano, along with freshmen Maria Souza and Caleigh Ward.

“They are all strong players and will be adding a lot to our team,” Maher said of the freshmen and sophomores.

“I am excited to finalize where everyone will be playing and who they will be partnering up with. We are going to have a very fun year,” the coach added.

The regular season was set to begin with matches on consecutive days April 2, 3, and 4 (weather permitting) and the Hawks are to host Pomperaug of Southbury Monday, April 8 at 3:30 pm.
