Swimming And Diving Team Places Fourth In Virtual Conference Championships
Newtown High School’s boys’ swimming and diving team placed fourth in the South-West Conference championships, held virtually in late March. The diving portion took place at New Fairfield High School on March 24, and Newtown’s swimmers raced at the Brookfield YMCA on March 25. Scores were shared between the schools to tally results.
Pomperaug of Southbury was first with 619 points. Newtown scored 248.5 to edge fifth-place New Milford by 7.5 points. Second went to Masuk of Monroe with 422, and Brookfield took third with 368. Newtown had some strong individual and relay performances, highlighted by Dan Godino’s second-place finish in the 500 freestyle, Godino’s third-place effort in the 200, and other top-ten outcomes for the Nighthawks.
The 200 yard medley relay team of Gabe Petertonjes, Colden Bobowick, Godino, and Max Luci-Bernard placed third in 1:45.
In the 200 freestyle event, Godino finished third in 1:48.53, and Matt Irving placed tenth in a time of 1:54.43.
Grant Carson was 11th in the 200 individual medley race, making his final touch in 2:26.92.
Luci-Bernard came in 11th in the 50 free, sprinting to the finish in 23.56.
Diver Joe Moran placed eighth with a score of 214.
In the 100 butterfly race, Bobowick came in seventh in 56.32.
Irving tied for sixth in the 100 free, clocking in at 51.90.
In the 50 free, Godino was runner-up, finishing in 4:51.23.
The 200 free relay contingent of Bobowick, James Guerrieri, Deegan Granville, and Irving placed sixth in 1:39.65.
Bobowick was fourth in the 100 breaststroke race in a time of 1:01.12.
Newtown’s 400 relay squad, comprising Luci-Bernard, Petertonjes, Irving, and Godino, was fifth in 3:28.20.
