The Hollywood musical Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (1954) will be the next film in the Someday Cinema Series. Screenings are planned at Edmond Town Hall, 45 Main Street, on Sunday, April 7, at 1, 4, and 7 pm.

Tickets are $3, and the 1 pm matinee will be shown with subtitles for the benefit of the hearing impaired.

After an early winter storm interrupted the film’s evening show in November 2018, series coordinator Jennifer Rogers was amazed at the public response.

“Not only did people call the Edmond Town Hall on that day asking for the film to be shown another time, but requests came into by email, from Facebook, and in person, too,” she said. “It’s nice to know we can give people what they want, finally.”

Writing in August 1954, Washington Post Critic Richard L. Coe alliteratively asserted: “Dandy dancing, singable songs and the ozone of originality make ‘Seven Brides for Seven Brothers’ the niftiest musical I’ve seen in months.”

The film had all the ingredients for a big win at the box office, though MGM disagreed, shifting some of its budget to back the Lerner and Loewe production of Brigadoon. But with star leads Howard Keel and Jane Powell, expert direction by Stanley Donen (Singin’ in the Rain), athletic choreography by Michael Kidd (The Band Wagon), and an Oscar-winning music by Adolph Deutsch, Saul Chaplin, Gene dePaul, and Johnny Mercer (“Moon River”), how could they lose?

Costume designer Walter Plunkett designed the dresses worn by the female cast from second-hand quilts.

Although the brides in the film are married in those dresses, a mini bridal show on Sunday will explore what they could have been wearing in 2019.

The Persnickety Bride, the film’s sponsor, will highlight a small collection of wedding dresses from The Lillian West, Justin Alexander, Paloma Blanca, and Lea Ann Belter lines. Each give interpretations of a rustic, outdoorsy, elegant country wedding with a contemporary spin.

The short bridal shows will begin at 1 and 4 pm, immediately followed by the film. Displays in the lobby from the sponsor and contributors, Floral Design by Melissa and Beth Zink Photography, will greet all attendees.

May’s film will be Mother (1996), starring Albert Brooks and Debbie Reynolds, on May 5. Visit [naviga:u]tiny.cc/2019somedaycinema[/naviga:u] for complete details of the entire season.
