Local Weavers Again Do Well At Handweavers’ Guild Biennial
Newtown residents Jen Rogers and Hanna Roehrs returned home from New Haven last weekend with ribbons from the Handweavers’ Guild of Connecticut.
The guild is presenting “Interlacements: Artistic Expressions in Weaving,” its biennial exhibition, at River Street Gallery at Fairhaven Furniture, 72 Blatchley Avenue in New Haven, through May 5. An awards ceremony was held March 30.
Ms Roehrs won two awards for a table runner called Tangerine Dream. She was honored with First Place for Table Accessories, a blue ribbon award; and The Special Complex Weavers Award, an honor from Complex Weavers given during a juried show featuring handmade items.
Ms Roehrs had earned two honors during the 2017 biennial exhibition. Two other local weavers also had works accepted into the juried show and one, Christine Wilkinson, also won a first place ribbon for one of her pieces.
Last weekend, Ms Rogers received a second place ribbon for a linen scarf she created using the Huck Squares Lacy Structure. It was her first entry into a Handweavers' Guild show.
The two Newtown residents were both on hand a few days earlier to help install the exhibition, which features 78 woven pieces. Artists are allowed to submit two handwoven pieces for the show.
Founded in 1948, The Handweavers’ Guild of Connecticut invites handweavers, spinners, and other fiber artists from all levels of experience to exchange ideas and share knowledge, to encourage and educate, to stimulate creativity, and to challenge their abilities in fiber art technique.
Gallery hours for “Interlacements” are Monday and Wednesday through Saturday, 10 am to 6 pm; and Sunday, noon to 5 pm. Admission is free and open to the public.
Demonstration Day will take place on Saturday, April 8, from 11 am to 3 pm.
