PETER KRASS âPORTRAIT OF WARâ TALK AT NAVAL WAR COLLEGE MUSEUM APRIL 25
avv/gs set 4-5 #695073
NEWPORT, R.I. â The Naval War College Museum presents a lunchtime lecture and book signing with Peter Krass, author of Portrait of War: The US Armyâs First Combat Artists and the Doughboysâ Experience in WWI, April 25, at noon.
Guests interested in attending this event who require base access must call 401-841-4052 by 3 pm, April 24, to have their names added to an access roster to enter the Naval War College at Gate One. Portrait of War tells the gripping story of the first artist-soldier to be recruited through official government channels to make a historical record of war.
Eight individuals witnessed more of the American fighting experience during World War I than any other United States participants, military or civilian. Commissioned as captains in the American Expeditionary Force (AEF), these men â known as the AEFâs Eight â risked their lives roaming through occupied zones and blood-soaked trenches to complete their mission of creating an official record of the war.
Drawing upon the graphic letters, diaries and memoirs the men kept as well as the interviews they conducted, Krass presents a completely different view of the Great War as seen through the eyes of these chosen few who were determined to capture âthe shock and loss and bitterness of it all.â
Krass is a freelance writer and author of several other historical and biographical works, including Blood and Whiskey: The Life and Times of Jack Daniel and Carnegie, which was selected by Library Journal as one of the best biography/business books of 2002.
This event is free and open to the public. Copies of Portrait of War may be purchased at the lecture for the author to sign. The Naval War College Museum is in Founders Hall (1820), the original site of the College and a National Historic Landmark.
