The Flagpole Photographers Camera Club will kick off an action-packed April with a special focus on action photography.

Readers are invited to join Newtown Bee Sports Editor Andy Hutchison as he shares his professional insights and practical tips for capturing fast-moving moments. Hutchison will cover everything from selecting the best angles and handling tricky lighting conditions to fine-tuning camera settings and capturing high-speed sporting events.

The hands-on session will be offered both virtually and in person at Newtown Senior Center, 8 Simpson Street, starting at 7:30 pm on Thursday, April 10. After the talk, attendees will have the opportunity to engage in a hands-on learning experience and participate in a Q&A session.

Andy Hutchinson has served since 2008 as the Sports Editor at The Newtown Bee, where he is responsible for reporting on games, writing feature articles, and photographing local sports. With years of experience capturing athletes in motion under challenging conditions — from low-light gyms to unpredictable weather — Hutchison brings a wealth of real-world knowledge to his action photography techniques.

On Thursday, April 24, the club will hold its monthly competition night, featuring members’ work across categories such as Nature, Open Color, Open Monochrome, Assigned Subject, and the Monthly Challenge. The competition theme for April is Peak Action, and the Monthly Challenge will focus on Books.

This event will also be held both online and in person at the senior center, starting at 7:30 pm, with social time beginning at 7:00 pm.

Additionally, on Saturday, May 3, Flagpole Photographers will host a workshop day aimed at helping photographers of all levels improve their skills while capturing the charm of historic Newtown and Sandy Hook. More details to come.

Flagpole Photographers Camera Club is a local nonprofit organization that offers a welcoming space for photographers of all skill levels — from beginners to professionals — to share their work, learn, and connect with others. The club also offers a popular annual “Leaders and Learners” program where members lead small groups covering specific topics.

There is no fee to attend meetings or competitions, and new members are always welcome. Members can enter monthly competitions, participate in workshops, attend field trips, engage in community programs, and showcase their work in annual exhibits.
