Newtown High School's boys' volleyball team opened the season with two straight wins, beating FCIAC teams Darien on the road on March 30 and Danbury at home on April 1.

In their season opener against Darien, the Nighthawks were able to fight back from a 2-0 deficit, losing 22-25 and 16-25 before sweeping the final three sets. The scores of those sets were 25-22, 25-16, and 16-14.

In their comeback win against Darien, captain Ardi Kodzodziku had 22 kills, 12 digs, and give aces. Captain Robbie Morrill had 16 kills, 13 service points, and six aces. Eric Moore had 24 assists, six kills, and two aces. Max Wrage had 22 assists, 11 digs, and sevent service points.

In their home opener against Danbury, however, it was not as close of a contest. The Nighthawks came out strong in the first set, with a 25-9 victory. They continued their strong play, winning the next two sets, 26-24 and 25-18. Morrill led the team with 14 kills, followed by Kodzodziku’s 13 and Robert DiSibio's eight. Wrage and Moore combined for every assist on the Nighthawk kills, aside by one from Morrill.

In addition to their strong offensive performance, Newtown thrived on the defensive end. They had a flurry of blocks, DiSibio having a team-leading four. Morrill and Kodzodziku led in digs, each having nine.

Assistant Coach Tony Nocera said winning the first two matches "feels good, but we are still looking to put everything together. However, we are close.

“We can improve some things defensively and work on different attacks and covering our hitters. Once we shore that up, we'll be good,” Nocera said.

Newtown defeated Joel Barlow of Redding 3-0 on April 3.
