Newtown High School' girls' and boys' lacrosse teams began the season with convincing wins - the girls posting a 15-3 victory over visiting Immaculate of Danbury and the boys logging a 20-1 triumph at Immaculate - on Tuesday, April 3.Boys Win Big

Alex Futterman netted eight goals and had a trio of assists to power the offense as the Nighthawks reached double-digit scoring the first half before taking their foot off the gas with the win well in hand.

Hana Rosenthal scored three times, and Ali Kelleher, Rylee Harrell, Dylan Zahansky, and Keeley Kortze also hit the net in the victory.

Charli Condon had four assists, and Kelleher, Harrell, and Kortze all recorded helpers.

"We rode the ball really well today; we transitioned the ball really well. We played high-pressure defense that disrupted their offense," Newtown Coach Maura Fletcher said.

Fletcher credited Colleen Phaneuf, Cassidy Kortze, and Lauren Carrino for playing solid defensively. Tess Davenport made four saves in goal.

It's only game one, and the Nighthawks have a ways to go before the playoffs when they ramp up to defend their South-West Conference title.

"There's always room for improvement," said Fletcher, adding that she would like to see a little better patience on offense.

Tucker Garrity had six goals and two assists, Layton Harrell netter four goals and three assists, Aiden Coleman had three tallies to go along with an assist, and Evan Eggleston also had a hat-trick performance, as the NHS boys jumped all over the Mustangs.

Jeff Garrity, Mike Garner, and Kyle Sullivan all had a goal and an assist, and Jack Kuligowski added a goal.

Tanner Stergue Garner combined to win 18 of 23 faceoffs.

Andre Sokk, Alec Budd, and Kyle Shirk each scooped six grounders to lead the way.

Goaltender Jake Dandrea recorded two saves in his first varsity start.
