Norman G. Kaback

Norman G. Kaback, 81, of 108 West Wooster Street, Danbury, husband of Carole S. (Clapper) Kaback, died April 1 at Yale-New Haven Hospital.

Mr Kaback was born in Danbury, January 24, 1922, son of Richard and Eva (Backus) Kaback.

In addition to his wife of 40 years, he is survived by a son, Richard N. Kaback of Danbury; three daughters, Karen E. Daubert of Newtown, Lori A. Kaback of Danbury, and Susan C. Kaback of Danbury; and three grandsons, Justin, Michael, and Christopher.

He attended Danbury schools and graduated from Danbury High School in 1940 and Danbury State Teacher’s College in 1950 with a bachelor of arts in education. In 1960, he graduated from Columbia University with a master’s degree and in 1963 received his six-year professional diploma from Fairfield University.

Mr Kaback began his teaching career in 1950 as a sixth-grade educator at Southbury Elementary School. He was an educator in the Danbury school system at the former Main Street School, assistant principal at Mill Ridge School, and principal of Park Avenue, Hayestown, and Morris Street schools. He retired in 1988 after 42 years in the Danbury public school system.

He was a World War II US Navy veteran, having served in the Pacific stationed at Pearl Harbor.

An active member of the Masonic Lodge of Danbury for 54 years, he served as a past master and trustee. A Shriner for 51 years, he was a member of the Pyramid Temple of Shelton and the Candlewood Shrine Club.

He was a member of the Association of Retired Teachers of Connecticut, serving on the board of directors and as nominating chairperson, president of the Northern Fairfield County Retired Teachers Association, and life member of the National Elementary School Principals’ Association and Connecticut Education Association.

In the 1950s, he served on the Committee of 1,000, which formulated plans for building schools for the future of Danbury.

A member of St George Antiochian Orthodox Church, he was a past parish council member and active on the annual festival committee. He was a member of the Danbury Lions Club and Danbury Democratic Town Committee and served as a Justice of the Peace.

The Masonic service will be conducted Friday, April 4, at 7 pm, at the Jowdy-Kane Funeral Home, 9-11 Granville Avenue, Danbury, and the Trisagion prayer service will be conducted at 8 pm.

The Rite of Burial will take place on Saturday, April 5, at 10 am in St George Antiochian Orthodox Church, 125 Kohanza Street, Danbury, with the Rev Joseph Longofono officiating. Burial will follow in Wooster Cemetery, Danbury.

Friends will be received in the Jowdy-Kane Funeral Home on Friday, April 4, from 4 to 8 pm.

Memorials may be made to St George Church Building and Development Fund.
