Glass Named To Governor’s Coalition

For Youth With Disabilities

HARTFORD — William Glass, a resident of Newtown, has been named to the Governor’s Coalition for Youth with Disabilities. As a member of the coalition he will join with 18 other educational, corporate, and community leaders who are strong advocates for children with physical and mental challenges.

Governor John G. Rowland established the coalition in 1994. Since then, the coalition has recognized the accomplishments of students with significant disabilities and raised funds to help them further their education. To date, the coalition has awarded a total of 129 scholarships to students from 63 Connecticut towns. Scholarships have been awarded to students who have overcome such obstacles as blindness, cerebral palsy, and obsessive compulsive disorder in their efforts to attend college.

Dr Glass has been instrumental in supporting children and adults with disabilities for many years and has received extensive recognition for his contributions. In 1991 he was honored as the Connecticut Educational Leader of the Year with special commendation for his work with physically and mentally challenged youth. In recognition for his work with the disabled, he received an International Advocate for Children Award and a National Urban Alliance citation for Exemplary Performance as an Educational Leader.

Dr Glass’ work has been profiled in four books and in many educational journals. He has also been recognized as a Kappa Scholar at Columbia University for Academic Excellence, where he graduated summa sum laude.

He is currently serving as the acting superintendent in Danbury and is also the assistant superintendent for instructions. Dr Glass and his family have been Newtown residents for 20 years.
