Estate & Tag Sale For Non-Profit Group, Saturday In Woodbury

WOODBURY — Wheels for the World, a not-for-profit organization with a local branch operating out of Bethlehem, is selling items acquired from an estate including original artwork, as well as collectibles and various treasures, at a sale to be held at the Old Town Hall in Woodbury. The event will be on Saturday, April 7, from 9 am to 4 pm.

All proceeds will support Wheels for the World, whose main purpose is to benefit the disabled, mainly through a collection and worldwide distribution of wheelchairs, metal walkers, crutches, and canes.

The Old Town Hall is on Main Street South (Route 6) at Mountain Road.

It costs approximately $150 to refurbish, ship, and properly distribute each wheelchair to an overseas location. Wheelchairs are sent to countries such as Bosnia, Romania, Poland, China, Cuba, Peru, and Ghana after they are repaired at the Cheshire Correctional Institute by inmates under the direction of Dominick  Rossi, the instructor of bicycle and wheelchair restoration at the institute.

The fully restored chairs are then shipped to their destination communities overseas accompanied by a physical therapist to aid, instruct, and support recipients in the proper fit and use of the chair and to assist them in dealing with their disabilities.

Wheels for the World is an outreach of Joni and Friends Ministries, a Christian organization based in California and headed by Joni Eareckson Tada. A quadriplegic since the age of 17 when she became paralyzed in a diving accident, Ms Tada is an author, public speaker, and mouth artist, and an inspiration to the disabled community.

Members of the local Wheel for the World branch will also be on hand to answer questions and to receive donations of used wheelchairs, metal walkers, metal canes, and metal crutches. Receipts are available for tax deductions. Call 203-263-0270 or 264-0530 for additional info.
