Snapshot: Ryan Slater
Family: My wife Lindsay, my daughter Madison, and my sons Landon, Parker and Mason.
How did you meet your wife? My sister set us up. I used to work at the mall, when I was in my late teens/early 20s, and I needed help at one of my stores and my sister thought it would be a good fit. We hated each other for like three months, and then we started dating.
Pets: I have a dog, a German short-haired pointer named Finn.
Work: I am currently a service manager at Candlewood East Marina in Brookfield. I’ve been there about 25 years, and was a sales director for the first 20.
What do you like to do with your free time? The kids keep me busy, usually chauffeuring them somewhere, and Scouts is probably the biggest time consumer. I’m also a DEEP boating instructor for the State of Connecticut. I do Safe Boating courses several times a year. We go skiing, and usually in the late winter and early spring we do a lot of maple syruping. This year we took the year off, but we make our own maple syrup.
Are you a member of any clubs, organizations and/or communities of faith? Scouting is the big one. All three boys are involved, and all three are in the same unit now, which is nice.
What did you want to be when you grew up? I wanted to be a physician’s assistant or a police officer. My passion was always for the water, however — I love being on the water. My grandfather started me on the lake, on a boat, when I was really young, and the job I have now is actually the first one I applied to when I was 16. I got hired on the spot, and I’ve been with the same company ever since. I just love being around it. I feel strongly that if you’re not passionate about what you’re doing, it’s not worth doing.
What was the most recent movie you saw in the theater? Probably something with the kids.
Favorite actor? Will Farrell.
Favorite movie genre? Comedy.
What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given? Money isn’t everything. Happiness is.
Pet peeves? I don’t like when people talk behind other’s backs. I like people to be honest.
Favorite travel destination? Grand Cayman.
What is something you cannot live without? Coca-Cola.
Favorite color? I’m partial to black.
Favorite food? Chicken parm.
What is your favorite thing about Newtown? The community. It’s the most united town I’ve lived in. There’s so many community events. As big as a town as it is, it still feels smaller — it doesn’t feel massive.
