MICHAEL KALMBACH’S AQUARELLES AT ROBERT MILLER GALLERY APRIL 12

avv/gs set 4-2 #694399

NEW YORK CITY — Robert Miller Gallery presents an exhibition of new aquarelles by Michael Kalmbach, on view April 12–May 19. An opening reception for the artist will be Thursday, April 12, 6 to 8 pm. This is the artist’s second exhibition with Robert Miller Gallery.

Kalmbach presents playful scenes of fictitious, doll-like creatures existing in dreamlike scenarios. The imagery is an amalgamation of inspiration taken from fables, fairy tales and personal memories. He invigorates the medium of watercolor painting by operating on an abnormally large scale.

Kalmbach is recognized for his paintings and sculptures wrought with fantastical imagery, unabashedly offering candid metaphors and passage into a collective subconscious. At first glance, his work possesses a certain naiveté, often described as childlike; yet his paintings are in no way childhood fantasies, but rather explorations of weighty themes from sexuality and arrogance to escapism.

In execution, Kalmbach’s new paintings are reminiscent of his older works which illustrated the adventures of his made-up characters, “Little Brush” and “Big and Little Paul.”

The gallery is at 524 West 26th Street. For information, 212-366-4774.
