Veteran Benefits Are In Jeopardy
Veteran Benefits Are In Jeopardy
To the Editor:
Veterans take note. The veteran benefits so many have fought so hard for are in serious jeopardy of being cut or eliminated. The soldiers, sailors, and marines fund in our state is once again being looked at by our politicians as a source of funds, something we cannot permit.
VA hospitals are getting cutbacks and some are considered being closed. This is happening at a time when we are at war and the needs of current and future veterans are increasing. Our current military forces are depending on us to protect their future. The Veterans of Foreign Wars is one of a few organizations that fights for veterans rights. Any organization is only as strong as its number. It is essential now in these days of budgets cuts to get involved. It is essential to reach out to this new line of veterans and get them involved. Promises are made during this election year, promises that usually seem to fall by the way side.
The VFW and other veteran organizations are here to remind these politicians of their promises. The VFW is an elite veterans organization that not everyone can be a part of. If you are eligible to join the VFW, I encourage you to do so today. I encourage family members whose loved ones are serving in Iraq and Afghanistan to help us recruit them. They have earned the title of âVeteran.â Contact your local VFW post or any post you desire and request an application. A special program is now in effect to cover the cost of the first year membership. Desert Storm veterans, we need you, too. You may not need veteran benefits today but who knows what the future can bring. The motto of the VFW is, âTo Honor the Dead By Helping The Living.â Help us carry this on.
Respectfully,
Richard Godfrey
