Services for Newtown seniors are sponsored by the Commission on Aging and are available at the Multi-Purpose Building on Riverside Road in Sandy Hook. For more information about programs offered at the Senior Center call 270-4310.

For information on federal, state and community resources available to seniors, call 270-4330 or 270-4315.

You may drop in at the Senior Center on Riverside Road in Sandy Hook weekdays between 10 am and 4 pm. A hot meal is served at noon for which you must reserve three days in advance.

Newtown has daily door-to-door mini-bus service Monday through Friday. Buses also run all day from the senior center to Sand Hill Plaza. On Fridays, the bus alternates between rides to Danbury Fair Mall and Berkshire Plaza in Danbury (to the new Wal*Mart store on Route 6). Cost is 60¢ each way for the Sand Hill Plaza trip, 75¢ each way for out of town. Call 748-2511 TWO DAYS IN ADVANCE to book a ride and get the out-of-town Friday schedule.

News For Week of                        April 5-9

*The senior center will be CLOSED GOOD FRIDAY, April 9. Enjoy the Easter weekend and we’ll see you bright and early on Monday, April 12.

*AARP INCOME TAX ASSISTANCE will be offered for the final time this year on April 12. Newtown seniors can take advantage of free tax help between 9 am and noon. There is no charge, but appointments are necessary.

*On Tuesday, April 13, Steve Rowley will be visiting to offer lead a discussion concerning LONG TERM CARE INSURANCE. His program, which will begin at 1 pm, will coincide with many of the topics in his new book, The Consumer’s Guide to Long Term Care Insurance.

*What is normal when it comes to aging and memory loss? Not everyone who gets older gets Alzheimer’s disease. Join Janet Girardat from The Alzheimer’s Association on Thursday, April 15, at 1 pm, for a program on NORMAL AGING AND ALZHEIMER’S.

*Enjoy A DAY AT BELMONT PARK. Newtown seniors can join a day trip to beautiful Belmont Park and take in a day at the races Thursday, May 13. Departure is 8:30 am, and cost is $60 per person.

Participants will enjoy a full lunch; choices are roasted garlic chicken and baked scrod with lemon and butter. Proper dress is required. No jeans or shorts will be allowed; men are required to wear collared shirts – and jackets are preferred. Call the senior center ofr more information or to sign up.

This Week’s Programs

*Hop over to the senior center on Monday, April 5, for EASTER BINGO. Start time is 1 pm.

*Massage therapist ANITA MOTT has begun visiting on the first Monday of each month to offer massage for a fee, by appointment only. Her next visit will be on April 5, and she will be here between 10 am and noon. Call for details on the cost of a massage and to make an appointment.

*NEW HORIZONS, a support group for widows and widowers, meets on the first Tuesday of each month. The next meeting will be on April 6 at 3 pm.

*On Wednesday, April 7, at 1 pm, join home health consultant Linda Parsloe for AN AFTERNOON OF BEAUTY, a seminar on spring’s awakening for your skin. Come learn which ingredients and formulas are best for your skin. Learn how to treat your skin like a prized flower. Call the senior center to sign up.

REMINDERS: The AARP DRIVING COURSE has been scheduled for Newtown seniors for Monday and Tuesday, April 19-20. Participants must attend both days in order to qualify for an insurance discount.

Pre-registration is required and there are only 25 openings available. Call the senior center to sign up.

*Thinking about doing some TRAVELING this year? Visit the senior center for full details on any trip including the following:

*GET LUCKY AT LINCOLN PARK. Newtown seniors are invited to spend a day at the gaming facility in Lincoln Park, R.I., where you will be kept busy throughout the day with gaming activities and dining facilities.

This trip is scheduled for Wednesday, April 14. Departure is 7:30 am. Call the center for price details (which covers motor coach transportation, a scratch ticket and Lincoln Dollars) and reservations.

*YOU CAN’T BEAT THE BATEAUX: On Wednesday, April 28, join a trip to New York City for a trip onboard the luxury vessel Bateaux New York. Cost is $68, departure is 8:45 am, and participants will enjoy a three-course meal, narration while sailing along the city’s skyline, and a visit to Cathedral Church of St John the Divine. Call or visit the senior center for details.

Monday: BBQ beef, rice, corn, cranberry juice, dinner roll, mandarin oranges;

Tuesday: Shrimp bisque, unsalted crackers, grilled chicken Caesar salad with tomato and Caesar dressing, parmesan cheese, croutons, Italian bread, fresh fruit;

Wednesday: Buttercrumb fish with lemon and tartar sauce, Louisiana rice, Oriental vegetable medley, whole wheat bread, tapioca pudding with topping;

Thursday: Roasted turkey with gravy, mashed potatoes, glazed carrots, cranberry sauce, rye bread, hot cross buns.

Friday: No lunch served – the senior center will be closed on Good Friday.

APRIL 12-16

Monday, April 12: Garlic herb chicken quarter with chicken gravy, herb stuffing, broccoli florettes, whole wheat bread, pistachio pudding with topping;

Tuesday, April 13: Cheese lasagna with meat sauce, Parmesan cheese, fresh zucchini, tossed salad with creamy Italian dressing, garlic bread, fresh fruit;

Wednesday, April 14: Chef salad (ham, turkey, egg wedge, lettuce and tomato) with French dressing, Portuguese roll, chocolate chip cookie.

Monday: AM Bridge, hatha yoga class, AARP income tax help (by appointment), massage therapy; PM Easter Bingo, chair exercise class, art class;

Tuesday: AM Pinochle, exercise; PM bowling (at Brookfield Lanes), New Horizons meeting;

Wednesday: AM Pinochle, chair exercise, line dancing; PM “Afternoon of Beauty” seminar;

Thursday: AM Pinochle, exercise, hatha yoga class; PM bowling (at Brookfield Lanes);

Friday: AM advanced mah jongg, sewing, quilting; PM beginner’s mah jongg, knitting.
