Not The Time To Go Backwards
Not The Time To Go Backwards
To the Editor:
It is most unsettling to read that the Board of Finance has cut $130,000 from the library budget. Do they not realize that the pulse of our town is in its library; that is the hub from which much of what goes on in our town takes place. It fulfills its primary functions well, with its fine collection of books and videos, Internet access, and excellent Reference Department, but it is so much more.
The varieties of programs designed for all ages from toddlers to seniors are outstanding and very well attended, and many civic groups, such as Literacy Volunteers, use the facilities. There is always art on display. Have you seen the current show of art quilts? No doubt about it, our library is a happening place. As you walk through the door the gracious staff and serene, warm ambience welcomes you. I, for one, appreciate this and truly feel at home there.
How unwise, how short-sighted to make such draconian cuts in the budget, which can only lead to cutbacks in collection development and curtailment of many library services.
Newtown needs what our library has to offer, and it needs to ensure that the library keep pace with our rapidly growing community. This is not the time to go backwards. I suggest that the Board of Finance carefully reconsider its actions.
