BRIDGEPORT – It was only a 1-0 loss, but it was a loss that opened the 2004 Indoor Soccer State Cup tournament and something like that could pose problems to a team bent on winning a championship.

Not for the Newtown Rampage, though.

The Rampage (Girls’ U12) rallied back from the loss with a 1-0 win over East Lyme (Southeast District champs) and a 2-1 win over Suffield (North Central District champs) to meet up again with Stamford (Southwest District champs).

And this time, it was the Rampage on the winning end of a 1-0 score.

Midway into the second half of a scoreless tie, Kate Bowen rocketed home the winning goal off a perfectly crossed pass from Taylor Smith. Monica Warek and Ally Modzelewski anchored the tenacious defense while goalie Katie Pessin registered five saves to notch the shutout.

Caleigh Boyle, Laura Bittman and Jordyn Good supplied the offensive pressure for the Rampage.

In the 2-1 win over Suffield, Warek led the offensive attack as she registered both assists for Newtown. In the first half Smith scored off a lead pass while in the second half Bowen scored off a throw in. Berenice Bryant played well defensively while Pessin made five saves to preserve the win for Newtown.

Kristen Tanner, Laetitia de Brantes, Hannah Basch-Gould and Susan Mason played well at forward to lead the offensive attack.

In the 1-0 win over East Lyme, Sara Kelley scored the lone goal. Modzelewski played well defensively while Pessin made five more saves to earn the shutout. Bittman and Boyle played well for Newtown. And in the 1-0 loss to Stamford to open the tournament, Basch-Gould, Good, Kelley, Tanner and Mason all played well. Pessin made eight saves in net while Bryant played well on defense.

The Rampage also put together a 2-0 regular season win over Fairfield and the Trumbull Sports Zone. Bittman and Kelley netted goals as Mason and Smith contributed assists. Kirsten Hudock, Warek, Modzelewski, Bowen and Smith led the defense to preserve the shutout.

Pessin had an outstanding game, making 24 saves to shut down the Fairfield offense.
