A state police pursuit of a New Britain man, which started on Interstate 84 in Newtown about 2 pm on Monday, March 26, ended in Southbury after the vehicle that the man was driving crashed and rolled over on I-84. The driver ran off, but was then caught near River Road.

State police said that while a trooper was stationed on eastbound Interstate 84 near Exit 10 using an electronic "license plate reader" to monitor vehicles with violations, the device alerted the trooper that a vehicle driven by Nathaniel Calloway, 28, of New Britain, was linked to violations. The electronic device informed state police that the vehicle's registration was suspended.

As the state trooper pulled onto the highway and attempted to stop Calloway, he accelerated on eastbound I-84 at a very high speed, exceeding 115 mph, with the trooper then attempting to catch up, state police said.

The pursuing trooper lost sight of Calloway's vehicle, but about one minute later, the trooper came upon the crashed vehicle, which had rolled over on the right road shoulder, state police said. As the trooper approached the auto, Calloway exited the vehicle through its rear window and then climbed over a fence and headed to River Road in Southbury.

Within minutes, Calloway was found and caught by the many Southbury town police and state police officers who were then searching for him.

Newtown Police Chief James Viadero said that Newtown police participated in an initial search for the man. An early report that there had been more than one person in the vehicle that crashed was untrue, he said.

Calloway was taken away without incident and charged with 11 offenses. He was later transported to Waterbury Hospital to be checked, state police said. The vehicle he had driven was identified as stolen. A set of brass knuckles and a large amount of US currency was seized from the vehicle, according to state police.

State police said Calloway was wanted by Wallingford police. He also has criminal court cases pending based on incidents that have occurred in New Britain and Meriden. Also, he has criminal convictions stemming from past incidents in New Britain, Meriden, and Berlin.

Among the 11 charges lodged against Calloway by state police were counts of reckless driving, engaging police in pursuit, evading responsibility, possession of a weapon in a motor vehicle, third-degree larceny, interfering with police, and first-degree reckless endangerment.

Calloway was held on $50,00 bail for court arraignment.
