Backed Into Each Other
Newtown Police report Linda Mulholland, 78, of Sandy Hook, operating a 2013 Volkswagen Passat, was backing from a parking space in a lot on Queen Street at 11:45 am March 14. Donna Curtiss, 78, of Oakville, operating a 2018 Subaru Forester, was backing from a nearby space. Both vehicles backed into each other.
No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.
No enforcement action was taken since the incident occurred on private property.
Collision On Left Turn
Newtown Police report Gillian Manesis, 24, of Brookfield, operating a 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan, was traveling westbound on Botsford Hill Road, approaching the intersection with South Main Street, at 6:45 am March 18. Tierney McGunnigle, 17, of Monroe, operating a 2017 Subaru Forester, was traveling eastbound on Meadow Brook Road, approaching the intersection with South Main Street.
Manesis attempted to make a left-hand turn onto South Main Street while McGunnigle attempted to travel straight onto Botsford Hill Road, and Manesis struck McGunnigle’s vehicle.
No injuries were reported. Both vehicles were towed.
Manesis was issued an infraction for failure to grant right of way while making a left-hand turn.
Hit By Oncoming Traffic
Newtown Police report Elaine Potoniec, 65, of Bethlehem, operating a 2020 Subaru Forester, was traveling southbound on Hawleyville Road at 7:11 am March 18. Lorraine Farrell, 46, of Wellington, Fla., operating a 2023 Volkswagen Golf, was traveling northbound on Hawleyville Road. Potoniec made a left turn to travel onto the Interstate 84 Exit 9 westbound on-ramp, and the front bumper of her vehicle collided with the front bumper of Farrell’s vehicle.
Both operators were evaluated on scene and transported to Danbury Hospital.
Potoniec was issued a written warning for failure to grant right of way to oncoming traffic.
Attempted U-Turn, Hit Car
Newtown Police report Clarence Boykin, 43, of Pleasantville, N.Y., operating a 2023 Audi A4, was traveling northbound on Hawleyville Road at 4:07 pm March 18. Lisa Joseph, 45, of Southbury, operating a 2020 GMC Terrain, was traveling southbound on Hawleyville Road. Boykin attempted to make a U-turn and struck Joseph’s vehicle.
No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.
Boykin was issued an infraction for making a restricted turn.
Found Smartwatch
Newtown Police report that at approximately 12:45 pm March 19, a black Garmin Smartwatch was found at 46 Mile Hill Road, Fairfield Campus.
The owner is asked to contact Newtown Police Department to claim, call 203-426-5841.
Unsafe Backing
Newtown Police report Emre Sariaydan, 24, of West Haven, operating a 2021 Ford Transit, was reversing from a driveway on Nebo Road at 2:16 pm March 19. Charles Staack, 47, of Newtown, operating a 2011 Subaru Outback, was traveling southbound on Mt Nebo Road. Sariaydan backed into Staack’s vehicle.
No injuries were reported. Staack’s vehicle was towed.
Sariaydan was issued an infraction for unsafe backing.
Struck Deer
Newtown Police report Susan Ashworth, 63, of Bethel, operating a 2022 Kia Seltos, was traveling westbound on Sugar Street at 7:49 pm March 19. A deer entered the road and Ashworth slowed to let it pass, but it ran into her car.
Ashworth was not injured. The vehicle was not towed.
No enforcement action.
Arrested On Warrant
Newtown Police report that an officer stopped Michele Zommer, 63, of Southbury, for a traffic violation at 5:17 pm March 20. The officer found she had a warrant for her arrest and charged her with failure to respond to an infraction.
Zommer was released on a cash appearance bond with a court date of April 3 in Waterbury Superior Court.
Restricted Turn
Newtown Police report Lynne Hawley, 73, of Sandy Hook, operating a 2021 Honda Civic, was traveling eastbound on Church Hill Road in the right turn lane at 2:17 pm March 21. Ronald Martens, 60, of Newtown, operating a 2007 BMW 530xi, was traveling eastbound on Church Hill Road in the straight lane. Hawley attempted to change lanes into the straight lane and the passenger side of her vehicle made contact with the driver’s side of Martens’ vehicle.
No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.
Hawley was issued a written warning for making a restricted turn.
Both Vehicles Towed
Newtown Police report William Brady, 26, of Newtown, operating a 2018 Honda Civic, was traveling northbound on South Main Street at 11:27 am March 22. Christopher Pulver, 41, of Newtown, operating a 2023 Tesla Model 3, was traveling northbound on South Main Street ahead of Brady and stopped to make a left turn into the parking lot of 150 South Main Street.
A non-contact vehicle pulled around Brady’s vehicle on the right using the northbound shoulder, and Brady went straight into the rear of Pulver’s vehicle.
No injuries were reported. Both vehicles were towed.
Brady was issued an infraction for failure to maintain a reasonable distance apart.
Hit While Parked
Newtown Police report Sophia Martinez, 16, of Sandy Hook, operating a 2016 Honda CR-V, was traveling westbound in the parking lot of 75 Church Hill Road at 4:03 pm March 23. An unoccupied 2009 Nissan Altima owned by Heather McLoone of Brookfield was parked in a parking space in the same lot. Martinez attempted to park in an adjacent spot and struck McLoone’s vehicle.
No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.
