Mary Grady
Mary Kathleen Smythe Grady, age 94, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 24, 2019, at her home in Redding with her daughter, Siobhan Grady, by her side. She was a Redding resident for more than 46 years.
Mary was born on March 12, 1925, in Syracuse, N.Y., to the late Kathleen and Anthony Smythe. She was the oldest of five children.
She was predeceased by her husband, Edward John Grady, Jr; her son, Sean Edward Grady; and her brother, Edward Smythe.
Mary is survived by her loving daughter, Siobhan Marie Grady of Redding; her three sisters, Eileen Ledyard, Peggy Meier, and Katie Smith; her four grandchildren, James Grady, Patrick Grady, Amy Leigh Gonzalez, and Lyndsi Black Price; daughter-in-law, Nicole Grady O’Keefe; her six great-grandchildren, Aidan, Penelope, Alana, Sean, Patrick Jr, and Adara; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews from the Smythe, Ledyard, Meier, Smith, and Feibel families.
Mary grew up in Cazenovia, N.Y., and graduated from Cazenovia High School and then went on to study at Cortland State University in Cortland N.Y., where she graduated with a Masters of Education Degree and became a teacher.
She taught first grade in Valley Stream, Long Island, and second grade in Suffern, N.Y., and for many years she taught English as a Second Language in Danbury.
Sacred Heart Church in Redding was Mary’s second home. She was the president of the Rosary Society; taught CCD; and was a Eucharistic minister, Lecter, and head of the RCIA Program.
In 2006, the priests from Sacred Heart Church nominated Mary for the Saint Augustine Medal Of Honor.
Mary was very kind, patient, loving, and supportive, and she was loved by all those who knew her. She had a very strong faith in God and will be greatly missed.
A Celebration of Life will take place at 11 am on Saturday, April 13, 2019 at Sacred Heart Parish, 30 Church Street, Redding. The burial will take place immediately after the service at Umpawaug Cemetery, 149 Umpawaug Road, Redding. Please join us for a luncheon at Pryor Hubbard Hall at Sacred Heart Parish.
