It’s For The Birds At Love & Knishes

SOUTHBURY — Spring is in the air and three lively musical programs will reflect that during April at the Love & Knishes Lunch Program of the Federation-Jewish Communities of Western Connecticut. All area adults age 60 and over are welcome to enjoy a noontime lunch followed by entertainment.

The programs take place in the Federation’s social hall at 444 Main Street North. The food is freshly prepared each week by personal chef Heather Bingham and features healthful, delicious meals with everything from organic mesclun salad to dessert. Lunch is served at noon and programs start at 1 pm.

On April 1, “A Springtime Fling” features pianist Ethel Kaufman and trumpeter Bucky Milam performing upbeat favorite old standards.

The April 15 “For the Birds” program showcases Cece Borjeson and Ruth George. Birds have played a prominent role in all the arts, symbolizing many things: owls for wisdom, doves for peace, turtledoves for love, wild geese for freedom, crows and ravens for war … the list goes on and on.

Whether the birds play a starring role, or simply appear in these songs just briefly, each song will have a connection in some way or another with our feathered friends. The duo’s music includes guitars, mandolin, banjo, harmonica, and vocals.

On April 29, guests can come celebrate the arrival of spring in a delightful program of vocal and instrumental pieces by pianist Jeanne Hinkson, mezzo soprano Helen Falcone, and flutist Jenny Li. “April in Paris,” “Younger Than Springtime” and “The Rose” are only a few of their wonderful selections. Also included will be two original pieces by Ms Hinkson.

Lunch reservations should be made by Friday for the following week. All programs are open to the public, and there is a suggested lunch donation of $5.50 for those aged 60 and above and $8 for those under 60. To RSVP, call Debby Horowitz, Brownstein Jewish Family Service Director, at 203-267-3177, extension 105.
