At BPW Meeting On April 7

When Joan Lavery started in the banking industry in 1968, the business was very different than it is today.

“When I first started, we used to post the ledgers by hand and interest was computed by hand,” she said. “And there was only one woman officer in the Connecticut National Bank.”

Today women outnumber the men in the branch offices of most banks.

“It’s all women except for the investment departments and even that is changing,” Ms Lavery said.

Until last year Ms Lavery was the branch manager of the Newtown office of Chase Manhattan Bank. Now she works in the Personal Financial Services division.

She will be speaking on “Women and Banking” at the Monday, April 7, meeting of the Newtown Business and Professional Women’s Club at the Inn at Newtown.

“My talk will be about how banking has evolved and its influence on women, and also women’s influence on banking,” she said.
