WILLIMANTIC – The first loss in more than 20 games wasn’t enough to deter the girls’ 12-and-under Newtown Hurricanes from capturing the indoor soccer State Cup Championship at Eastern Connecticut State University with a 2-1 win over reigning champ Suffield.

The Hurricanes opened the State Cup tournament with a 2-0 loss to Montvale despite the strong efforts of Megan Hansen, Genna Scheuerell and Kasey Schulz. The ‘Canes recovered and nipped Somers, 1-0, on a goal from Nora Lynn Shimko. Goalie Cassie David made some great stops while Emily Weber, Belle Hydock, Molly Curry, Haley Keane and Adelle Cerreta anchored the defense.

The ‘Canes then moved on and blew out South Central, 4-1, with a hat trick from Shimko (one goal came on a beautiful header off a corner kick) and a solo tally from Kelley Sullivan. Forwards Mary Bloshuk and Sarah Shannon kept up the constant pressure on offense.

In the title game, the ‘Canes jumped to a first half lead of 1-0 off a long shot from midfield from Colleen Thornberg. After Suffield tied the score in the second half, Newtown went to work one final time, with Thornberg finding the net for her second goal with four minutes left in the game.

Chelsea Fay scored three goals as Newtown defeated Milford, 5-0, to remain undefeated in the Trumbull Indoor Soccer League. Fay also assisted on a goal while Monica Warek and Kirsten Hudock added goals.

Kristen Tanner registered a pair of assists.

Goaltender Katie Pessin was tested by long, hard and high shots but turned away all 18 of them to record the shutout. Taylor Smith, Hannah Basch-Gould, Laetitia de Brantes and Kate Bowen anchored the defense.
