The Newtown fifth-grade boys' traveling basketball team concluded the 2002-03 regular season at 11-11 after putting together back-to-back wins. Newtown defeated Darien (39-36) and Fairfield (42-38) before heading on to the Monroe Tournament.

In the win over Darien, George Zaruba scored 12 points and Dan Lynch added 11 to get things going. Nicky Tarantino and Andy Lapple combined for 14 points. Zaruba canned a three-pointer with seven seconds left to send the game into overtime.
In the win over Fairfield, a late rally propelled the locals.
The Newtown sixth-grade boysâ travel team dropped a 58-48 decision to Mahopac in the semi-finals of the Ridgefield Tournament despite Connor Collier and Kurt Nacewicz combined for 24 points. The locals qualified for the semi-finals by virtue of a tiebreaker.
Cole DePuy, John Grimaldi and Andrew Meisel scored seven points apiece while Keith McGrath played well.
Newtown advanced with the aid of a 35-27 win over Darien in which a box-and-1 defense shut down Darienâs top scorer. The locals allowed just six points in the first half and took a six-point lead, matching baskets and hitting key free throws down the stretch to record their 19th win over the season.
Daniel Quinn and Collier combined for 16 points while Depuy, Meisel, and Ricky Gallucci each contributed five points apiece. McGrath and Chris Marks rounded out the scoring.
