Robert E. Stockbridge, Sr, 72, of RR#3 Box 198C, Meshoppen, Penn. (Auburn Center), formerly of Newtown, died at the Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre, Penn., on March 19.
Born in Wellesley, Mass., on September 13, 1930, he was the son of the late Wallace and Pearl (Williams) Stockbridge.
Mr Stockbridge was a graduate of the Wellesley High School, Class of 1949. After high school, he was a veteran of the US Navy, serving his country during the Korean War.
For many years, he was employed as a maintenance supervisor for Union Camp Corp in Newtown, retiring in 1988. After retiring, he became sexton of the Trinity Episcopal Church in Newtown, serving his church for three years.
After moving to the Meshoppen area, he became a member of the Retta United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, the former Barbara L. (MacKinnon) Stockbridge of Auburn Center, Penn.; a son and his wife, Robert E. Stockbridge, Jr, and Dianne of Southington; and three daughters and their husbands, Holly and Dana Healey of Middlebury, Robin and Searl Johnson of Tunkhannock, Penn., and Lynne and Rainer Ertl of Newtown; two sisters, Jean Mathews of Cape Coral, Fla., and Ruth Tolar of Millis, Mass; ten grandchildren, one great-granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Wallace Stockbridge, and a sister, Penny Haigh.
Funeral services were held on March 24 from the Retta United Methodist Church, with the Rev Nancy Russell and the Rev Larry Russell of the church officiating. Interment was in the Retta Cemetery, with graveside military services conducted by the members of the Rought Hall Post #510 American Legion and the Endless Mountains Post #3583 VFW.
The Sheldon Funeral Home, Main Street, Meshoppen, Penn., was in charge of arrangements.
