To the Editor:

For everyone that calls Newtown home, let’s continue to support The Newtown Bee — our truly local newspaper.

How many towns (in America) can say they have such a treasure as The Newtown Bee? Whether you choose to purchase the print version or prefer to get your local news “On Line,” The Bee is there for you, every week and has been since 1877.

Not even the COVID Pandemic could prevent the continuous publication of the paper with the electronic version keeping us all up-to-date with happenings in the town until it was safe for the printing presses to resume.

Indeed, the Newtown Bee Facebook Page currently has 14K “Likes” and 15K Followers!

Many former Newtown Residents and “Snowbirds” continue to subscribe to keep up-to-date.

News, Features, Businesses and Community Events, School Sports, Local Government, Religious, Veteran and Charitable Organizations, Clubs etc are all covered by the intrepid team of Bee journalists and photographers, as well as the dedicated sales and promotion team. For parents with young children, what’s more exciting than seeing their accomplishments recognized with a photo in the paper?

As members of the Newtown Lions Club we cannot be more grateful for the outstanding coverage and support we have received over the years and we’re sure other groups feel the same. Publicity is a crucial part of getting the word out, whether it be about events in town or fundraising, and The Bee is always there for us.

Each and every Editor, Journalist and Bee Employee (current and former) deserves recognition. Today we want to give a special shout out to the ever-present Shannon Hicks for her help, support and advice (knowing that she would likely prefer us not to mention her by name!)

Of course, nothing should be taken for granted. We believe that each and every Newtown Resident should play a part in ensuring our Local Newspaper celebrates its 150th Anniversary in 2027 and powers through that milestone, stronger than ever.

“Buy The Bee!” What better way is there to spend $1 per week? In fact longer-term subscriptions are even better value and every contribution allows The Bee to better plan the services it wants to provide.

Introduce and share your Bee with your neighbors. We have many new residents in town. Some may not be aware of what a treasure we have.

Encourage them to subscribe and keep our local newspaper front and center in the town — healthy and vibrant.

Enjoy it yourselves. Show your families. Tell your friends!

Frank and Neil are right on. The Bee is the best way to stay connected with what’s Happening in Newtown. The Bee needs your support in return. Subscribe and be informed.

Forty years ago, when I began a career in journalism in Connecticut, most towns had a reasonably well-staffed, thriving weekly newspaper. And the area had a substantial, award-winning daily paper.

Newtown is fortunate to have The Bee and should not take it for granted.
