NHS Voices Coming Together To Raise Funds For Haiti

By Eliza Hallabeck

Hope, unity, and encouragement were some of the words Newtown High School English teacher Amanda Friedman told one student to keep in mind while preparing Friday, March 19, for the upcoming Voices for Haiti Benefit Concert.

The concert, which will feature nine musical performances and one dance performance, is scheduled for Thursday, April 1, from 7 until 9 pm, with doors opening at 6:30. The event will be held in the school’s auditorium. Tickets will be available for purchase at the door, and will have suggested donation prices of $6 for students, $16 for adults, and children under 12 are free.

Performances will feature A Minor, a University of Connecticut a cappella group, a performance from Dance, Etc, and local band Show Me The Skyline.

All proceeds will go to Save the Children, a nonprofit organization working to create positive, lasting change for disadvantaged children.

Baked goods will be on sale before the show, during intermission, and after the show also.

After seeing reports on the earthquake that struck Haiti, Ms Friedman said she wanted to create something in the Newtown community to help.

She contacted NHS Assistant Principal Jason Hiruo, who had her speak to NHS English teacher Jennifer Davidson. With Ms Davidson the idea soon formed to create a community event.

Ms Friedman explained after school on Friday that music is a unifying force.

“Everyone can appreciate and enjoy music,” she said, “no matter who they are, where they are from, or where they are in life.”

Many people have stepped forward, interested to help with the concert, she said.

“People are just so willing to give their time for something that is just so important,” said Ms Friedman, “and I think that is all we can ask from people.”

The set list for the program is the NHS Singers, Greg Padavano, Dance, Etc’s Dance Troupe, the band XY, The Detentions, A Minor, NHS Musicals, Jazz Band, and Show Me the Skyline.

“We absolutely could not have done this alone,” said Ms Friedman.

She said a thank you to the administration, faculty, staff, students, parents, and community for their support and help.

“We hope it is a big night for people to come out, join together and enjoy the performances,” said Ms Friedman.
