 String Orchestra Music Festival

DANBURY — On Saturday, March 27, the Fairfield County String Teachers Association will present its annual 36th Annual String Orchestra Music Festival, and Newtown will be well represented with eight of its young residents participating. Performances will begin at 3:30 pm.

Featured on the program will be three string orchestras with a total of over 200 area middle and junior high school students participating. Twenty towns in the western region of Connecticut will be represented.

The event is an enrichment experience for qualified string instrumentalists recommended by their school music teachers and selected by festival committees.

The conductors for the festival will be Nancy Hambleton-Torrente, a teacher, clinician and cellist who will lead the 6th-7th Grade Orchestra; Robert Schwartz, an educator and performer, who will conduct the 8th-9th Grade Orchestra; and Phillip Coonce, a professional violinist and conductor, will conduct the Honors Orchestra.

Newtown students in this year’s performances will include 6th-7th Grade Orchestra members Nathan Horvath, Samuel Olamyev, Anna Pinckney and Anthony Vournazos; 8th-9th Grade Orchestra members Erin Bell, Kai Hedin and Alex Lampel; and Honors Orchestra member Leah Pinckney.

A public concert will be presented at Western CT State University’s White Hall, on the midtown campus at 181 White Street.

Tickets are $6, with children ages 14 and under admitted for free.
