PORTLAND, MAINE — The Portland Museum of Art presents the exhibition “New Natural History,” on view through May 11.

Inspired by science and armed with a keen eye for observation, many of Maine’s contemporary artists are drawn to the world of natural history. The 29 works selected for this exhibition begin with references to older forms of scientific inquiry, but quickly move into the realm of the modern in conception.

Highlights include Mary Hart’s representations of the natural world in exacting detail and Lauren Fensterstock’s more abstract works made from butterfly wings. Photographers Gary Green and Tom Birtwistle further present an ironic twist on traditional forms of natural history.

The museum is downtown at the corner of High and Congress Streets. For information, www.portlandmuseum.org or 207-775-6148.
