Tale Twisters Was The Best-Read Team

For First Annual Battle Of The Books

Twenty-seven eager young people in grades 5–8 were the contestants in C.H. Booth Library’s first annual Battle of the Books last Sunday afternoon. The winning team, Tale Twisters, scored 24 out of 24 possible points.

Team members were Katie McMorran, Eliana Kohrman-Glaser, and David Tortora; the girls are sixth grade students and David is a fifth grader.

The second place team was Lemon Baskets, and they were sixth grade students Kyra Smith and Jane Elizabeth Moran, and eighth grader Christine D’Alessandro. The Lemon Baskets finished with a score of 19 points.

All the teams answered trivia questions based on four books: The Wanderer by Sharon Creech, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix by J.K. Rowling, Searching for Dragons by Patricia Wrede, and Hippolyta and the Curse of the Amazons by Jane Yolen and Robert Harris.

As moderator Liz Arneth remarked, the students chose to be spend some time at the library, sharing their love of reading, rather than stay home on a rainy afternoon watching TV. In a sometimes tense, sometimes humorous trivia contest, the teams huddled together to figure out the answers to questions such as “Who was the Sirius-obsessed man that Harry meets in Mr Weasley’s office?” (answer: Kingsley Shacklebolt) and “What is the name of the code that Cody learns and writes in his dog-log?” (answer: Radio Code)

The first place team won a pizza party at My Place Restaurant. The runner-up team won a movie night at Edmond Town Hall.

All the participants received books courtesy of the Friends of the Library. In addition, each member of the winning team, Tale Twisters, will choose a book for the library to order and dedicate to them. Members of the library’s Young Adult Council assisted in the afternoon program.

In addition to the two aforementioned teams, participants on Sunday also included Team VBNBJ (fifth grade student Ben Stoller, and sixth graders Vinny Brophy, Brian Reed, Nicholas Badiola, and Justin Villamil), Friends (fifth graders Megan Duero, Tara Dawley, Kelly Ann McCarthy, and Jessica Jowdy, and seventh grader Shannon McCarthy), Kingdom Luxkaranayagam (fifth grader students Brandon Luxkaranayagam, Luke Shearin, and Mac Morlock), Flying Bats of Darkness (fifth grader Katie Salaris and sixth graders Marisa Friedman and Gretchen Streett) and Sizzling Brains (Riley Cameron, Julie DeAngelis, Rachel Fatse, Kristin Stoller, and Brittany Ziman, all in seventh grade).
