Knowledge Is Power

To the Editor:

I would like to recommend the Parent Connection for another excellent forum held on Wednesday, March 16. Dr Peter Glassman’s presentation on “Addiction in all Ages” was so informative and delivered in an easily understood manner. I found it quite advantageous to have my daughter attend with me as our lines of communication were open. Knowledge is power and on this subject is essential, as we can never know too much.

As parents we love and want to protect our children always. Being informed and up to date on drug issues can help us do that. It is never too soon or late to get involved and become educated on this subject. If not our own children or grandchildren, perhaps a neighbor’s or friend’s child could be helped through our education. The Parent Connection is free, nonjudgmental and supportive group aiming to stop drug abuse through education. Confidential weekly parent support groups are also held on Monday evenings from 7:30 to 9:30 pm at Newtown Youth Services, 10 Glen Road, Sandy Hook.

As a realtor in town having firsthand knowledge of our excellent school system, I feel fortunate that I can inform my clients that our town is taking positive measures to educate our parents and children in the fight against drug abuse. Newtown is a leader in this area and has been asked by several surrounding towns for our help to start up their Parent Connection.

If you have not yet had the opportunity to attend a meeting, please join us on Wednesday, April 13, at 7 pm, in the Newtown Middle School Auditorium. Dr Jonathan Michaelis, a clinical neuropsychologist, will be speaking on “How Drugs Change Your Brain.” You’ll always gain knowledge and can take what you like and leave the rest. If you’re unable to attend, you can see the presentations on Charter Community Vision 21 (check our website, www.newtownparentconnection.org, for viewing times and additional information). To the regular attendees, keep coming — it works.

With sincere thanks and gratitude to a wonderful organization!
