Chapin Returning For Concert With Rising Stars, Sunday Afternoon At NHS

Grammy Award winner Tom Chapin, nationally acclaimed folk singer-songwriter, will return on Sunday, March 25, as part of a family-friendly performance at Newtown High School, 12 Berkshire Road. The concert will begin at 3 pm.

Leading young performers throughout the county including The Fairfield County Children’s Choir under the leadership of Maestro Jon Noyes of Orange, jazz violinist Sam Weiser of Westport, classical guitarist Yossi Kohrman-Glaser of Newtown, and other rising stars will open for and perform with Mr Chapin. The concert is produced by The Little House that Roared, a program of Congregation Adath Israel of Newtown.

“I’m excited to come back to Newtown and perform with these wonderful young musicians,” said Mr Chapin, who performed at the high school last year to an audience of 650, and is returning this year due to popular demand.

“Now that everybody knows that last year’s concert was a smash hit, we are anticipating selling every seat in the house well in advance of the event, so get your tickets while you can,” urges Rabbi Shaul Praver of Congregation Adath Israel. The Little House That Roared is Rabbi Praver’s brainchild. “We started The Little House That Roared series three year ago as a showcase for highly talented young musicians,” said Rabbi Praver. “I guess we strummed the right chord because now we’re putting these kids on the same stage with Tom Chapin.”

In addition to his solid guitar picking, clever song lyrics, and authoritative vocal performance, Mr Chapin is known for using his music to advance important causes. For example, Mr Chapin “testified” before the New York State Senate by singing his song, “You Can’t Spell Smart without Art.” Mr Chapin was advocating to reinstate funding for the arts in New York State.

Mr Chapin’s current CD, Give Peas a Chance, advocates for locally grown food and improved nutritional provisions in schools throughout the country.

Janis Gibson spoke with Mr Chapin for a feature that appeared in the March 16, 2012 print edition of The Newtown Bee (“Little House That Roared, 2012 Edition— Tom Chapin Is Looking Forward To Returning To Newtown”), which can also be found online at NewtownBee.com under the Features tab.

Tickets for the March 25 concert are $12 to $20 if purchased in advance. They will be $15 to $25 at the door. To purchase tickets, visit TheLittleHouseThatRoared.ticketleap.com, or Dunkin’ Donuts, 6 Queen Street in Newtown. Tickets can be charged over the phone by calling 203-209-4662.
