The Society of Creative Arts of Newtown (SCAN) is well into planning two events.

The first is an artist demonstration by Susan Grisell, who plans to paint a still life in oil on Wednesday, March 22, at 1:30 pm. The program will be in the lower level of Newtown Meeting House, 31 Main Street (at the flagpole).

The demonstration is open to the public free of charge.

Grisell, a Gaylordsville native, has been painting since her teens when she began studying with her neighbor Bernard Lennon. She began showing her work at age 18.

A representational painter, Grisell works primarily in oil. Landscapes, figures, and still life are her subjects. She considers her work as a sort of visual diary, an attempt to communicate her perception of her subject at the time to the viewer, and ultimately to enhance that person’s appreciation of his or her surroundings.

Grisell has exhibited primarily in outdoor shows since 1965, but now prefers online or indoor venues.

Grisell has won frequent awards since her late teens, including Best in Show at Washington Square Outdoor Art Exhibit in New York City and at Art at the Meetinghouse in Roxbury; the Brackman Award for Figure and Portraiture in Mystic, the Landscape Award at Washington Square Outdoor Art Exhibit, and many others.

Beyond that, however, she values the esteem of her colleagues, some of whom have called her a “painter’s painter.” She has painted on both coasts, throughout her home territory of New England, in New Mexico and Wyoming, and abroad in France and Italy. Her work is in private collections throughout the United States, in Europe, China, Japan, and Australia.

Juried Spring Show & Sale

SCAN will be presenting its annual Spring Juried Show & Sale at Art and Frame Gallery, 77 Main Street, April 1 through May 31.

Show hours are Monday through Saturday, 10 am to 6 pm.

Media accepted into the show include works in watercolor, oil, acrylic, pastel, graphics, printmaking, sculpture, and mixed media. Receiving will be on Thursday, March 30, from 3 to 6 pm. The prospectus and further information for interested artists can be found at scanart.org.

Jurors for selection and awards are nationally known artists Mark Hannon, Fang Sullivan, and Dick McEvoy.

The Artists’ Reception and Awards Ceremony is scheduled for Saturday, April 8, 4 to 6 pm. The awards will be presented at 5 pm.

The annual Larry Newquist Award for Excellence/Best in Show prize for $600 and numerous other prizes (totaling over $2,000) will be given for outstanding work at the show reception.

The public is invited to the reception, as well as to the exhibition.
