Newtown Seniors Treated To Dinner And A Show For NHS’ ‘Hello, Dolly!’
Newtown High School’s PTSA Student Government invited senior citizens to a free buffet and special performance of the school’s spring musical of Hello, Dolly! on Wednesday, March 12.
Seniors, as well as some of their friends and loved ones, filled the many tables spread throughout the school’s gymnasium. Everyone could treat themselves to a wide variety of foods and drinks ranging from penne alla vodka, eggplant parmigiana, and spring mix dressed salad to water, coffee, and tea. People could also satisfy their sweet tooth with desserts such as cookies.
The NHS Student Government organized the event in conjunction with the school’s PTSA, along with some of the school’s administrators. Around a dozen student volunteers, all members of the school’s student government, helped guide people to the gymnasium and clean up trash throughout the dinner.
While Fitzgerald’s Fine Catering provided the food, the NHS Student Government provided the drinks and desserts.
Andrea Tersigni also volunteered to play Hello, Dolly! songs on violin while people ate. So as people laughed and talked amongst themselves at their tables, Tersigni got everyone ready for the show they were about to see.
This is far from the first time the high school has hosted a special dinner and show for local seniors.
NHS Student Government Co-President Marty Dunn said the school has hosted senior shows for years, and that it has become a tradition at this point.
As for how it feels hosting it every year, Dunn said that it’s awesome to connect with people “they don’t really get an opportunity to interact with.”
He added, “It lets us talk to people and just give them an overall fun night.”
Dunn also said that it gives seniors a chance to see the show without having to worry about a huge crowd, which could be overwhelming for some people.
NHS PTSA member Kathleen Shope said that the event is a perfect two-in-one: “It gives the cast a chance to do a final dress rehearsal in front of an audience, and it lets the seniors enjoy a dinner and a show for free.”
