Friends of Newtown Seniors (FONS), working with Newtown Social Services, is planning a Senior Earth Day spring cleaning event on Sunday, April 24, from 9 am to 1 pm.

Bev Bennett Schaedler, chair of FONS Chore Services, is coordinating the effort.

“Our goal is to form as many teams willing to help a senior who no longer has the ability to work/clean up their yard,” Bennett Schaedler told The Newtown Bee when she initially announced the effort in January. “All locations will be prescreened and then assigned a team.

“Whether you’re a corporation, civic organization, part of a club, Scouts, students, church groups, families, or friends, anyone who wants to make a difference is welcome.”

Not all locations will need the full four hours to complete their tasks.

“Some groups could be done earlier than 1 o’clock,” said Bennett Schaedler, who had a half dozen teams registered as of March 14. She is hoping for at least six additional teams, she said.

A central gathering/kickoff will start at 8 am, with coffee, bagels, and donuts, Bennett Schaedler said this week.

Groups will then head to their work locations for the 9 am start.

Volunteers will need to provide their own hand tools, such as rakes or shovels, and gloves. Outdoor bags will be provided to the teams.

Rain date is the following Sunday, with the same schedule to be followed.

For additional information or to register a team contact Bennett Schaedler at 203-430-0633 or FONSChoreServices@gmail.com.
