The spring track and field program runs March 28 through May 28 and offers practices Monday through Friday at Dickinson park and the Newtown High track from 4:45 to 6 pm.

Nutmeg also offers a competition schedule. Participants are not obligated to be at all practices and meets to participate in the program. The Spring Track program is open to residents of Newtown and surrounding towns who are between ages of 5 and 16. Participants have the choice of running, hurdles, relays, long jump, high jump, shot put, discus, and javelin.

The cost is $225 for the spring track and field season.

Nutmeg Striders was formed in Southbury in 2004 and expanded to Newtown in the fall of 2014 with cross country, and added winter conditioning at the NYA Sports & Fitness, and spring track at Newtown High and Dickinson Park. A Summer running program will also be added this year at Dickinson and Orchard Hill Park.

Nutmeg Striders has close to 300 athletes from Newtown and surrounding towns and accepts youth in kindergarten through high school, and of all abilities. The 2015 year was another successful one for Nutmeg Striders, producing multiple state champions in cross country and track and field at the middle school level, and one All-American.

Head coaches Erin and Jeromie Schumacher are advisory Board members of Dylan's Wings of Change in Sandy Hook and have co-created the Wingman Program.

"Our Nutmeg programs are successful and continue to grow because of the encouragement and support our athletes give each other on a daily basis," Coach Jeromie Schumacher said. "We've also had many team sport athletes join our programs to improve their running."
