Learning About Stuttering By Admir Galica
To the Editor: "NMS Students Raise Awareness About Stuttering" [Bee, 3/18/16] about twin brothers Ben and Ethan Paley raising awareness about stuttering at Newtown Middle School. I think these two brothers should be commended because their actions foster understanding of a largely misunderstood problem.
I totally enjoyed your article
It must have been thrilling to have Paperboy author Vince Vawter speak to the class. To the children at the school, Vawter must have made the speech problem have a human face. Another way for people to understand stuttering is to acknowledge the many famous people who stutter. The Stuttering Foundation website (www.stutteringhelp.org) has a library of biographical articles on famous people who stutter or use techniques to bring them fluent speech. I particularly liked the article on Bruce Willis because it gives me hope that one day I may be able to blend into the world of fluency like he did. There are also articles on Marc Anthony, Noel Gallagher of Oasis and many others.
Until I read your article, I was unaware that Vince Vawter was writing a sequel to Paperboy. I can't wait to read it. It will be interesting to see if the main character's speech problem has improved through speech therapy.
Sincerely,
Admir Galica
