A Snowy Start To Spring
Snow continued to fall across town Saturday morning, the first full day of spring.
Mother Nature is not moving easily into the new season, which officially arrived with the Spring Equinox at 6:45 Friday evening. Residents who had been seeing signs of spring — melting snow giving way to dirt and grass waiting to come back to live — had to step back one step while another small storm worked its way across the region.
Snow started on schedule on Friday. It arrived, as had been predicted by the National Weather Service, nearly on the dot at 1 pm.
The weather conditions led to the high school making the decision by mid-morning to not only operate on an early dismissal schedule, but also to cancel Friday evening’s Drama Department performance of City of Angels. (Performances continue Saturday night and Sunday afternoon, however. Tickets purchased in advance for Friday will be honored at either remaining show.)
Additional groups also altered plans, including Parks & Recreation and St Rose of Lima, who had hoped to host a post-St Patrick’s Day Friday Bingo Night. Both groups cancelled their plans by early Friday afternoon.
Travel conditions deteriorated by the evening rush hour. Most drivers responded in kind, with only a few minor accidents reported.
The forecast had called, however, for the snow to finish by daybreak. Instead, it made another appearance Saturday morning before coming to an end around 10:30. Between the two snow events, approximately 4-5 inches of fresh precipitation greeted residents as they woke up and began their weekend.
A shining sun followed shortly behind what many certainly hope is the final snowfall of winter 2014-15.
Public Works Crew Chief Anthony Capozziello said Saturday morning that most town plows were dismissed around midnight.
“The snow stopped last night around that time, and we went home,” he said Saturday morning. “There was a light snow, and then this quick snow this morning,” he said, referring to the morning appearance of additional snow.
An on-call Public Works crew was still on duty on March 21.
