Newtown High School’s hockey team will compete for the Division III state championship at Yale University’s Ingalls Rink in New Haven on Saturday, March 22.

The Nighthawks, seeded second in the bracket, will oppose No. 4 EO Smith-Tolland at 10 am — the second of three Connecticut hockey championships on the slate for the weekend. The Division II title game is scheduled for the night before, and the D-I final is set to take place later in the day on March 22.

Newtown went 13-4-3 in the regular season, and EO Smith-Tolland was 14-5-1. These teams met on January 18 and skated to a 1-1 tie.

The state tourney path to the pinnacle game for Newtown included a 5-1 win over No. 15 Joel Barlow of Redding, a 4-1 victory over No. 7 Hall-Southington, and a 6-1 triumph over No. 11 Tri-Town.

EO Smith-Tolland got to the big game after a 5-4 edging of No. 13 Wethersfield, a 5-2 victory over No. 5 New Fairfield-Immaculate of Danbury, and a 3-2 win over top-seeded Masuk of Monroe.

Newtown goaltender Patrick McLoughlin and Jack Martin (No. 8) prepare for a faceoff during state tournament semifinal action on March 18. The Nighthawks defeated Tri-Town 6-1 and now turn their focus to a matchup with EO Smith-Tolland in the March 22 championship game.
