State Plans to Replace South Main Street Bridge

Governor M. Jodi Rell has announced that $1.63 million in state funding to replace the bridge that carries South Main Street (Route 25) over Cold Spring Brook in Newtown is expected to gain approval when the state Bond Commission meets March 28.

The bridge is located on South Main Street near Sand Hill Plaza, said Joe Tani, who heads the town highway department.

The funding is part of a $45 million package that will pay for nine state bridge projects and design work for future projects. A further $30 million to pay for five major road projects also expected to gain approval.

“Connecticut’s transportation infrastructure has been at the top of my agenda since I took office,” Gov Rell said in a prepared statement.

“With these Bond Commission items we are embarking on a major overhaul of Connecticut’s roads and bridges, part of a continuing effort to ensure that motorists and travelers get where they are going in a safe and efficient manner. We know how important transportation is to Connecticut’s economy and the investments we have made over the last few years reflect our commitment to keeping goods and people moving,” the governor said.
