Newtown High School Career Center Lists Available Scholarships

The Newtown High School Career Center publicizes all scholarships of which it is notified.

A few of the scholarships, typically national ones, request that money be enclosed with the application. The Career Center believes that students should not have to pay to apply for scholarships. If a student chooses to apply for a scholarship that charges a fee, however, the Career Center strongly advises that he or she first check its authenticity through the FTC Consumer Response Center, www.ftc.gov, 877-FTC-HELP; the National Fraud Information Center, www.fraud.org, 800-876-7060; or the Better Business Bureau, www.bbg.org or 703-276-0100.

The following scholarships are the latest to be announced:

National Restaurant Association Education Foundation Scholarships: Scholarships for $2,000 are offered by the NRAEF to graduating high school seniors who plan to continue their education in the restaurant and foodservice industries. Applicants must be accepted and plan to enroll in an accredited culinary, restaurant management, or other foodservice-related program.

Students are required to apply online at NRAEF.org/scholarships by May 16, and submit transcripts and letters of recommendation by that date.

John M. Bailey Memorial Scholarship: Three $1,000 scholarships will be awarded by the Connecticut Criminal Justice Educational and Charitable Association to graduating high school seniors and undergraduates who plan to major in any of the public service fields of study such as criminal justice, fire study, homeland security, corrections, legal studies, etc.

The awards are based on character and leadership qualities in school and the community as well as scholastic aptitude. Interested students should download an application from the information section at CCJEA.org and submit the application by May 1.

Connecticut AFL-CIO Scholarship: The Connecticut AFL-CIO is offering one $500 tuition award for study at any accredited college or university to a high school senior who is the son or daughter of a dues-paying member or him/herself is the member of any union affiliated with the state labor federation.

The scholarship may be used for either part-time or full-time study and is renewable annually upon successful completion of each year’s studies. Interested applicants should forward a copy of their high school transcript, evidence of acceptance to a college or university, and an essay of no more than 500 words about access to health care in the United States. The essay question is available in the Career Center.

The deadline is May 11.

Society of Women Engineers National Scholarships: The organization offers renewable scholarships to female high school seniors who plan to study engineering or computer science at an accredited college/university. The minimum GPA is 3.5 out of 4.0 and the awards range from $1,000 to $10,000.
