Property Assessment

To the Editor:

I urge all property owners in Newtown to double-check the field cards and tax information listed for your property. After a mysterious bathroom appeared in my house during the last reevaluation, I appealed to the assessors’ office for a review. When showing the “mistake” to the person conducting the interview, I also noticed that an extra 400 square feet of living space had also mysteriously appeared sometime during the ten years living here.

An adjustment was made for the “mysterious restroom” and “newfound” square footage, but when I mentioned the overtaxation to the assessors’ office, the arrogant reply I received was, “You should have caught us.” Maybe you should “catch them” too.
