Tara Gaston of Newtown, a sophomore at Gettysburg College, and Caitlin OâKeefe of Sandy Hook, a senior at Gettysburg, have both been placed on the Deansâ Commendation List for outstanding academic achievement for fall 2007. Tenney Brian, a sophomore at Gettysburg and a resident of Sandy Hook, has been placed on the Deansâ Honor list for the same semester.
Briana Berg of Newtown was named to the High Honors roll for the third marking period of the 2007-08 school year at the Canterbury School in New Milford. Lisa Favicchia of Sandy Hook was named to Highest Honors for the same marking period.
Matthew Sean Miller of Newtown was one of 2,782 students to make the 2007 fall semester Deanâs List at the University of Montana.
Wentworth Institute of Technology, located in Boston, has announced that Peter Oggeri of Sandy Hook has earned Deanâs List recognition for the fall 2007 semester.
Newtowners Colin Curran and Jennifer Stephens have been named to the Deanâs List at Providence College for the fall 2007 semester.
George Burch of Sandy Hook deployed on March 3 to begin work on his first service project of the year with the National Civilian Community Corps, an AmeriCorps program. Founded in 1994, AmeriCorps NCCC is a residential national service program created to assist with disaster relief, improve the environment, enhance education, increase public safety, and address unmet human needs. He will be training full-time in Denver for ten months, which will emphasize teamwork, leadership development, communication, service learning, and certification by the American Red Cross. As a corps member, George will be responsible for completing a series of six- to eight-week-long service projects as part of a 10- to 12-person team. His first service project will end in mid-April, at which time he will change locations and begin a new project.
Newtown Middle Schoolâs literary magazine, Opus Optima, has been selected by the National Council of Teachers of English to receive a rank of Excellent in the 2007 NCTE Program to Recognize Excellence in Student Literary Magazines. Newtown Middle School was one of 453 schools entered into the 2007 program. NCTEâs Program to Recognize Excellence in Student Literary Magazines recognizes students, teachers, and schools for producing excellent literary magazines. The programâs mission is to encourage all schools to develop literary magazines, seeking excellence in writing and schoolwide participation in production.
