Praise For The P&Z

To the Editor:

The Newtown Residential Preservation Society and its supporters wish to express appreciation for the time consuming efforts and difficult judgments made by the Planning and Zoning Commissioners who voted to reject the application put forth by the Cambodian Buddhist Society of Connecticut, Inc for a special exception from local regulations.

Persons on the board worked hard before rendering their conclusions. These dedicated individuals spent long hours discussing issues pro and con. They took into account many concerns; for example, excessive noise and activity, congestion, safety hazards, general character of the neighborhood, failure to comply with applicable state health codes for septic system operation and water supply, lack of harmony with nearby architecture, as well as effects on property values.

In addition, they listened to comments from homeowners, former neighbors, and other residents. They also heard testimony from experts in conservation, environmental preservation, construction and engineering, land usage, health, safety, and law. Visitations were also made to the area in order to evaluate that site.

Members furthermore researched findings and familiarized themselves with the facts, analyzing them and assessing the credibility and reliability of written and verbal input.

Our P&Z officials conscientiously and thoughtfully performed their civic duties as ethical, impartial, and well-informed representatives of the citizens in our community. Such volunteers deserve much credit for their equitable decisions.
